One Thing I Miss About Church is....
#51
RE: One Thing I Miss About Church is....
I can't think of a single thing I miss about the church. From what I recall - mass was a chore, church-goers were the most dull and mentally stunted bunch of people I'd known, priests were uneducated yet condescending pricks, "information" they provided was useless gibberish and 99% of religious art, music and architecture was tacky and un-imaginative.

We never got cake in any of the churches I ever went to...

Oh dear! The social aspect is what they're meant to do well, to get you hooked in and hope you mistake those feelings for magic. Sounds like they fucked that up real nice.

When I was a kid, our SS class went Christmas caroling to shut ins.

I didn't appreciate it at the time, but several of them were brought to tears that anyone remembered them.

Absolutely nothing.  I've replaced all of the worthwhile things about church (socialising, etc.) in other ways, there is nothing about church that I miss, nothing about religion that I miss, I'm entirely fine without it.
There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide mankind that cannot be achieved as well or better through secular means.

I get the sentiment, but I'm pretty sure your nuts would prefer church.

How many times are we talking about going to church, and how many times slamming the car door?  If the slamming of the car door is once, and the going to church is for life, then I am not so sure you are picking the right option.

I know, I'm sorry.

I got my lot in life handed to me in a different flavour, but it wasn't that different really. My father basically considers himself god.

I miss the feeling it used to give me, when I was in preschool and early elementary school, that we had really come together to inquire into something and find out the truth about things like why we are here, where we came from, and where we are going.  I don't miss people's sociological snobbery, but then that's because there's plenty of that whether you go to church or not.
Essentially, I see church as a phase of growth that I went through when I was young.  It wouldn't do me any good to go back, I had the experience of it and I got out of it whatever I got out of it at the time.
I was a Seventh Day Adventist, so there was really nothing special about the architecture and the potlucks were all vegetarian with hyper weird dietary fads predominating.  Certainly no lard in the pie or really even any real sugar...I don't miss the social part of that at all.
The feeling I had back then that we were really seeking truth and knowledge has also since been overshadowed by the fact that they told us what they told us about the answers, and my disappointment in the truth value of what they said.
