I feel like this might be a joke going over my head, but my ex was catholic and I never heard of anyone doing this.

Soap I've heard of but never from anyone who'd either done it or suffered it.  Hot sauce is kinda frightening.

I should note that all my off hand opinions about child rearing techniques are not only free but entirely unencumbered by any practical testing. (My stepson was seven when we married and while he had some issues he didn't act out a lot.)

I agree, though my 3 year old loves pickled jalapeños as a snack. She'd eat a whole jar of them if I let her. Pretty sure she'd consider a mouthful of hot sauce a reward.

I'm not sure how to feel about the soap method. It's most just an unpleasant taste and the toxicity is highly exaggerated. Apparently you need to eat a few bars before anything horrible happens, and from what I can tell most parents only use a squirt or two to associate the taste with foul language. I don't see why not just explain why it's not polite to say certain words. But what do I know…

I still get nauseated by the smell of any lemon scented soaps.

I don't know if I would go as far as to call it abuse, but it's really not something I want for my kids.

Electra was the girl with her father.

One other thing:  I do not recall Electra having sex with her father.  Do you have a proper reference for that?  Electra plotted with her brother Orestes to murder their mother and stepfather as revenge for their mother and/or stepfather murdering their father (it is "and/or" because there are different versions of the story).  But I do not recall an incestuous relationship between Electra and her father Agamemnon.  See:

Am I just forgetting some part of the story, or is this quite different from the situation with Oedipus?

I'm not an expert on the details, but I recall some of it:

Oedipus, in mythology, killed his father as was foretold, even though he tried to sidestep this fate,
but when he married his mother, he didn't realize she was his mother.
I know they slept together, they had four or five children, I forget exactly.
I recall that when the truth of their relationship was discovered,
he gouged his eyes out.  I think his mother killed herself.

Electra plotted deliberately to kill her mother, in revenge for her father's death.
I don't believe Electra ever actually slept with her father,
but I know her brother was mixed up in it somewhere,
and I think she ended up going mad, or in some sort of poverty or disgrace.

Yes. Morons that scream at there partners in public are a good example.

We will just have to agree to disagree then. I've been in plenty of situations (as a child and an adult) where someone has decided that something I have done (or not done) warrants physical violence on their part. I have first hand experience with this anywhere from an open handed swat on the bottom to being hospitalized. When you look at someone and know that they feel so superior to you that they believe they are justified in hurting you to scare you into doing things their way, it's a very disgusting and dehumanizing feeling. No one should ever be made to feel that way, especially not a child.

Have to say, I had a ex girlfriend that tried to hit fairly often. Although she could not physically hurt me, she made it so that I was never able to have another relationship in my home town agian because she lied about me raping and harassing her. So I actually can sympathize with your situation. I say what i said not because I feel superior to people, but because I honestly have had times where I wish someone would have smacked me before I opened my mouth in public.
