Facing a dilemma

From what investigators told me he has two other adult children that have moved away and he lives alone in an apartment and works cash jobs as a handyman.

With all due respect to your mother (I would consider such an act a compliment to her of the highest order, anyway), are you sure  you're not the mailman's kid?

How did a guy like you emerge from a lineage like that?

Prison might be a step-up, for him. Max Security camps (where he'll be going) are definitely "kingdoms of the sociopath".
A Christian told me: if you were saved you cant lose your salvation. you're sealed with the Holy Ghost

I replied: Can I refuse? Because I find the entire concept of vicarious blood sacrifice atonement to be morally abhorrent, the concept of holding flawed creatures permanently accountable for social misbehaviors and thought crimes to be morally abhorrent, and the concept of calling something "free" when it comes with the strings of subjugation and obedience perhaps the most morally abhorrent of all... and that's without even going into the history of justifying genocide, slavery, rape, misogyny, religious intolerance, and suppression of free speech which has been attributed by your own scriptures to your deity. I want a refund. I would burn happily rather than serve the monster you profess to love.

You must have missed it in my first post, he was my step-father.  I'm not from him in any way, but was despised by him in every way.  Thank you for the compliment though.  I like to think I am who I am because of what I went through.  Yes it was horrible, and I've only given you guys the cliffs notes version (teens weren't so good either), but I've had a lot of character building moments that could have honestly gone either way.  My goal is to be the best father I can, give my kids something I never got.  I think that's a goal for a lot of parents.  At the same time, teach them about respect, consequences and forgiveness.  If we don't forgive people that have wronged us we give that person an opportunity to live rent free in our heads.  It was a lesson I had to learn the hard way.  So despite my troubles, I think I've come out better because of them.

My apologies for the mistake, Kingpin. I just forgot that you had called him your stepfather.

Makes a lot more sense, now, though.

I know that the fact that he was his stepfather has already been stated, but that is not what interests me about your (apparently) rhetorical question.

If one goes back far enough in anyone's lineage, one is probably certain to find a murderer, rapist, etc., somewhere along the line.  Probably several.  You are not identical to any of your ancestors, nor are you merely the product of your genes.  Environment plays a role in what you are.  And your exact environment is not exactly the same as anyone else's.  So each one is unique.  (Just like everyone else.Wink)

He may still be a threat to others too. Justice is paramount, do what you can and you will deserve nothing but my respect, fail to and you will deserve my sympathy. Either way, I'm sorry for your terrible experiences.

I know this is necro posting but I just wanted to provide an update. My step father was sentenced on Nov 9th to 40 years in prison, chance of parole in 20 years. Most likely he will never be in public again considering his age and health. Good to have closure.

I'm glad to hear that you have closure, finally.

Great news. Happy for you.
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."
