Perhaps now that Zahi Hawass is no longer calling the shots he'll be able to gain some interest.  Certainly Egypt needs to do something to reinvigorate the tourism industry....aside from shooting the tourists.

Radar reveals two new rooms in Tutankhamun tomb

The Egyptian pharaoh queen Nefertiti could be buried in two newly-discovered rooms in King Tutankhamun's tomb, according to a British archaeologist.
Nicholas Reeves says radar scanning has revealed two extra rooms hidden in the walls of the tomb.
Egypt gave Mr Reeves the go-ahead to use the non-invasive radar to test his theory that Nefertiti's undiscovered remains were hidden in one of them.

Given the state of the tourism industry in Egypt they have to let him proceed....and hope he is right.

Next, they have to stop the islamic nuts from killing the tourists.

Let's hope it turns out to be something significant, especially since the excitement of the hidden room in the Great pyramid went nowhere.

The one obvious problem I see is  that since the founding of the 18th dynasty by Ahmose I there had been in general usage a "Valley of the Queens" as distinct from the Valley of the Kings.

Why Nefertiti would have been buried there instead of the more proper Valley of the Queens is mystifying.  For that matter, Nefertiti drops out of sight long before Akhenaten so why was she not buried in Amarna as he was?

But, let's see what comes out of this.  No one blocked up those two rooms for shits and giggles.  They had to have a reason.

That's pretty cool. Why did Zahi block studies like this?

This is the kind of stuff I'm casually interested in, but don't follow closely. Like if you want to go on a tangent about archaeology I'll listen, but I don't have much input to give.

Remember the line in the original Planet of the Apes where Taylor says of Dr. Zaius:

"He's the Minister of Science but he is also Defender of the Faith"


Zahi had the same problem.  He was in charge of the Department of Antiquities but he was wedded to a story which is an article of faith among Egyptologists.

Continuing the tale, it seems the Egyptians are ready to proceed with another radar scan.

On April 2, a new series of radar scans will be performed on King Tutankhamun's tomb to search for hidden chambers that may contain an undiscovered royal burial, Egypt's antiquities ministry has announced.

Scans performed by Factum Arte, a company commissioned to scan Tutankhamun's tomb, show unusual lines and abnormalities in the plaster of the tomb, Reeves said, adding that these features indicate that a wall was built over a doorway in ancient times.

This could be true but it is still a hell of a leap from there to Nefertiti's "tomb."
