If it's the only game in town, then we should practice loving our fellow man and work toward rehabilitating prisoners and trying to prepare them for a productive life after prison. That must be our focus rather than just letting a person rot in a cell and become more bitter toward society. They should realize they must pay a price for their crime, but that we do care about them as persons and that there is such a thing as redemption.

We'll have to pay for rehabilition as well. It's not like they're voluntarily surrendering themselves or showing up at the door looking for services. If you can understand why I can't force a tomato into your hands and then bill you for it....it should be pretty easy to understand why charging prisoners for their jailtime is ludicrous.
You know most of those guys are broke, btw? Even if it weren't so laughably simple-minded....I'm really not sure how you intend to squeeze blood from a stone. Debtors prisons? Work Camps? Chain Gangs? LOL, "the good ole days", when you could force your unpaid labor to manufacture a product you would sell at hilariously inflated prices. You know that's why the prison complex went full body farm..right? We cut off all their lucrative little side arrangements. Rehabilitation and love indeed......
