The violent adherents of the various religions, are getting their ideas from the same texts the peaceful adherents do.



Of course, both violent and peaceful adherents are cherry picking.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

Thanks, many of those are great answers, specially the ones of cherry picking. I didnt know the not true Scotsman is a good one too.
I told him "with what authority you can say YOUR interpretation is the correct one. Bin Laden had his own interpretation and a whole set of followers as well. How can you, a person not better than me or anyone else, understand the mind of a God?"
