At this point I'm more concerned over the punitive nature of the American system. In most parts of Europe, you can't be charged under the age of 14. Oh yes, there would be consequences, but these would be trying to turn that boy before he turns into a full blooded serial offender. Just locking him up will have the opposite effect. Unless they plan on throwing away the key on an 11 year old.

It's not so much about mercy. It's about a kid, who obviously got serious mental problems. That's an adult killer in the making and if you just lock him up, you do make him. But he's also still at an age where intervention is possible, according to forensic psychologists. So it's in the best interest of society to give him treatment instead of just punishment.

If it weren't a gun, he'd have just strangled her, poisoned her, beaten her, stabbed her ext... People seem to forget violent crimes that result in death that did NOT involve a gun happen all the time. The media just doesn't feast upon those stories as a way to stir up controversy.  

It's very easy to kill with a gun. Five year old kills two year old sister, no problem. You can try to blow off the problem but it won't go away. Not until we're all dead, anyway.

Most likely, he'll have to be in juvenile detention until he's 21.  From what I understand, that's basically a recipe to make him a lifelong criminal.

Eleven year olds have been tried as adults in the U.S.  Even the Clinton administration has advocated for that.  It's insane.

The kid needs detention in a juvenile mental institution, if there were such a thing.

And no eleven year old should have unsupervised access to a shot gun.
