There are very few countries that are a shining example of human rights sadly. Britain isn't as bad as Saudi or the United States but Britain has done lots of bad things.

Name a country that hasn't when given the opportunity?

By all accounts, a human rights committee shouldn't have representation from any country on Earth IMO.

Um, Liechtenstein? Yeah, I know, it's hard. Greenland too, if it were a country.

See bolded.

Lichtenstein has never really wielded as much power or wealth as Britain, Saudi Arabia or the US has it, and it's a pretty damn insignificant country. Would you rely on Lichtenstein to defend your human rights?

I wouldn't.

I would posit that there are countries out there, however few, that just want to exist without any trouble. What do you mean by "given the opportunity"? There are countries out there have no intention of attacking their neighbours and seek to treat everyone equally. But what is regarded as "fair treatment" always has a degree of subjectivity involved. Ultimately I don't think any is really perfect simply because humans have disagreements about what is acceptable behaviour (and not because they may or may not want to be evil).

I was surprised as well about that Saudi is the opposite of human rights and they shouldn't be on said committee.

It seems none of this bothers the French...

Quote:France has signed deals worth 10 billion euros ($11.4 billion) with Saudi Arabia, said French Prime Minister Manuel Valls on Tuesday, underscoring the shared foreign policy stances that have helped deepen the two countries' military and economic ties.

...

France's Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the deal includes the start of negotiations to provide Saudi Arabia with its own communication and observation satellites — something the kingdom has been coveting as it expands its regional military reach and fights a war against Shiite rebels in Yemen.

Is that part in bold halal?  It seems like putting satellites into space would piss Allah off.  He seems to be picky like that.

Irrational beliefs fuck up morality.

I find myself saying this a lot lately: if God/Allah/Jesus/whoever has a problem with something, leave them to sort it out themselves. Every time you act on their behalf, you're contradicting your belief that they are actually real and have any power.

There's no way they can have anything meaningful to say about human rights from our perspective. Until they outgrow this religious extremism, they will be forever stuck in the dark ages it seems.

Remember, the USA had prohibition also.  And the Feds killed people because of it.  Religious fanatics started it as well.

The good news for muslims is that they have access to rivers of wine in their paradises.  They're going to have a grand old time partying for all of eternity.
