Internet speed, 2015

RE: Internet speed, 2015
You know the sad thing? Now that the coalition policy is to downgrade the NBN to "fibre to the node", we in Canberra have had fibre-to-the-node for 14 years so it'll be no better than what I already have. The good news is since iinet owns it now that they'll continue to ruthlessly undercut the price of NBN to ensure we stay on the old F2TN!

The WIN/Gallup End of Year Survey 2013 found the US was perceived to be the greatest threat to world peace by a huge margin, with 24% of respondents fearful of the US followed by: 8% for Pakistan, and 6% for China. This was followed by 5% each for: Afghanistan, Iran, Israel, North Korea. -LINK

He didn't look up cheating because he wanted to stop, he wanted to justify what he was doing and to keep that continuing on." - Nicole Cooke

My ISP have just informed me that I've been upgraded to 200Mbit down although I have to pay a few £ for delivery of a capable modem. I don't mind paying as the new one will have 5Ghz WiFi which will help home reception.

Not me.

My connection is rock solid, all the time.  Never drops, EVER, and about 500Mbit unlimited upload and download for about $40 / month.

Just thought you guys would like to know that. Big Grin

That information is probably the #1 reason I can't bring myself to move back to Canada. Note to self: if you can hear your modem handshaking with the internet, you are not living in the 21st century.

You're in South Korea, right? I am unfortunately stuck in the land of tea and bad teeth for now. If you didn't get the stereotype, I meant the United Kingdom. Internet here kinda sucks compared to South Korea obviously.

(December 23, 2015 at 5:09 am)Aractus Wrote: I actually just changed VDSL2 plans, I don't think it will affect my speed, but I'll post it when it's transferred to the new plan.

Here's the plan: Buisness VDSL2 $99.99/month, includes all local, national (except 1300's), & mobile calls on VOIP. The speed I get should be 40-50Mbits down, & about 20Mbits up. I bought the business plan rather than the residential plan because the shaping speed is 20Mbits - which for Aussies is still "fucking fast internet mate!" Plus it should exempt me from the mandatory data retention law, which only applies to residential connections. I had to speak to the Business sales team to sign up for it - had a good banter & yarn with the bloke as well while doing so!

It's also much better value than the NBN plans (residential or business, which have a shaping speed of just 8Mbps down/1Mbps up for the residential and just 512Kbps/512Kbps for the buisness), even IF the NBN was available I'd still rather pay for VDSL2 - it may only be half the speed (pretty much exactly) for both Up & Down, but the 20Mbps/20Mbps shaping speed can't be beaten.

I'll post back when connected through the new plan, but I think it'll stay the same:

Okay here we go:

My line rate was (approx) 52000/22000 kbit/s, but when I took out the splitter that went up to 71000/26000 kbit/s. Then I put the splitter back in, but it made no appreciable difference to my sync speed - so I think what happened was since I unplugged the phone it has improved the line quality (despite being connected through a splitter). It could well be caused by improper cabling, or something like that.
