Good luck with that, ma'am. I hope it irons itself smooth. Thanks.
I had been preparing for the consequences resulting from the inevitable reckoning in the back of my mind for some time. I've long considered it best to learn to get by with or without people, even family. I'll be fine, either way.

In real life I never had a religious discussion, and, as I always keep saying, I don't even know if my brother is a believer. It's not the stuff you talk or be asked about and it's not part of daily life. So, I'm not doing rounds, rubbing it into people's faces and nobody ever came up to me to rub any religion in mine. Yeah, same here. The only person who remotely cares is my 93 year old grandma, and she herself is like - nah, I don't believe in an afterlife, or God, but quitting the church? That goes too far!
I know about my wife's family that they are basically all atheists, but other than that I'm at a loss. Church membership or even attendance is not really a reliable indicator here...

Actually I'd describe where I live as much of a 'shit hole'. It's a fucking dump lol.

I don't hide that I'm an atheist.

I don't lie to anyone about anything, ever. I don't care who knows or who likes it and anyone who tried to fire me for it would wind up in court.
There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide mankind that cannot be achieved as well or better through secular means.

I live on the principle of you didn't actually ask me, so you didn't need to know. Not hiding it, just didn't come up in conversation.

I'm sorry, that has to be really hard.

You're a physician, correct? Do your patients ever ask you about religion?

I would like to say the same thing, but it can get more subtle than that. My management would find other reasons, they do waves of layoffs not all that uncommonly. It would not take much to get me on that list.
This is interesting, and something I didn't think about when I started this thread: This probably varies a lot by geographical region. I live in the midwestern US as a transplant, where most people identify as Christian, and there are cultish churches all over. When asked point blank, (which fortunately does not happen commonly), I tell people I grew up with the Episcopal church (this is true), or am "unaffiliated". I think my coworkers currently think I am Jewish, so I let them believe that.
