help with a scientific study of religions
Hi,

I'm an atheist physicist and I'm doing a fun-research on the locality of Gods! Basically, I intend to show that the distribution of prophets of similar religions, say Abrahamic religions, suggests that god was created through some cultural processes. For example all of the prophets in Qur'an or Bible were sent to a small region on the earth as opposed to a uniform distribution which needs to have some in America and Australia!!!

Well, as a raw data I need the names of all of the prophets mentioned in Abrahamic religions (including Islam) and the location where they were supposed to become prophet.

Anyone can help me with that?

Cheers

Then you also have the apostles and saints.. I'm sure there's a study bible with a better list, but this will be a start off the top of my head.

Thanks dude.
But I really don't have that much time to sit and read all through pages to find the location of each! I'd much appreciate if someone could give me a list of them and their locations only! I'm sure it must exist somewhere on the web. However, I couldn't find it as easy as it should be! Tongue

I think Tack did a lot of work there in finding and listing the wiki pages that should contain the info you are asking for. Wiki pages make for quick reading, easy to skim through too if you don't want to do any real reading at all. You will not be able to cite anything in your research though, if that is the case. How serious a research project is this? High school class? I know you are calling yourself a physicist, but...

Thinking

Edit: I notice on rereading, that you say it's a fun-research, so you might not need to show your sources, I guess.

I can't seem to find an easy reference and I don't think I have the time ATM either.

A "scientific study" of religion is an oxymoron.

Just consider when they do a "religious study" of science.

Gotta disagree with you on this one, min. Imo many religious phenomena can be studied as part of psychopathology (abnormal psychology). The border between religion and insanity is unclear to me- very possibly it doesn't exist at all.

Theres also sociology and anthropology, of course, but they don't count as science imo.

How do you define a religious "phenomena?"

Essentially, any phenomenon that a religious person interprets as having religious meaning or content.

Some examples: visions of angels, god speaking to someone, committment to a set of 'truths' that demonstrably conflict with reality, speaking in tongues etc

These are bizarre experiences and/ or irrational states of mind. Thus best studied from a psychopathological standpoint.

Okay...that could be anything, though. Some jesus freaks think they see his "face" on skillets, water stains, and cheese sandwiches.

Whatever happened to plain old "crazy?"
