It's not just NC... it's the most conservative part of NC. I'm sure their three atheists are on the far side of town.

There are only two now - I moved into Charlotte city limits over 3 years ago.

That's a lie - we have a lot of people in the Concord/Kannapolis/Salisbury area who are atheists, and they're fantastic people.

I'm surprised it took them this long to figure out what the facility was for. Noticing construction is not a Southern thing. Being fucking nosy nannies totally is.

I clicked through the article - I don't know how many of you did - and the building is already approved for homeless housing. The real problem, according to residents, is they were concerned with "loitering" and "crime".

First of all, when you're poor as shit and there's nothing to do in your city - like social and community programs that cost little to nothing - WTF ELSE ARE YOU GOING TO DO BUT STAND AROUND.

Second of all, crime has a lot of factors contributing to it, but not having basic human necessities is definitely one of them. So provide it, and fucking mitigate it you fucks.

So I looked the church up, and it's not terribly far away from where I lived for several years. I know the area. The people there would just as soon spit on you as wish you good day, depending on how greedy they felt. Not because they're rich, but because they're also financially tenuous most of the time, and nothing scares the shit out of you like seeing where "but for the grace of god" - or terrible politicians - you could end up.

Quote:The facility is managed 24 hours a day and participants are screened and have to undergo drug testing, Hosack said.

City leaders talked to the director of CCM about the neighbor's concerns and afterwards leaders said everything they're doing there is legal.

They're being normal Concord assholes.

What this really boils down to has more to do with socio-economic prejudices that the religious don't realize actually matter more to them than their own religion.

People of lower socio economic status - read: middle-middle class and below - who identify as conservative/republican in this country are often incredibly prejudiced towards anyone who they feel are cheating them out of their jobs/money/services. The problem is, they admire the wealthy, so they direct their ire at other poor people and assume they are using up the resources. It's easier to pick on people who have a shittier life than you, instead of on the people who have the things you also want.

North Carolina has been cutting services and funneling taxes and other funding into corrupt politicians for a while now. Charlotte in particular is finally seeing some traffic solutions being finished/worked on - the completion of the 485 corridor, the building of a light-rail extension, etc - but many of us have little to no goddamn grasp of where our taxes are being sent to. We're going to be organizing a voter registration party for February to get more of our atheist group out and voting, but I'd also love to start looking into things to see if we can determine how and where the money is being spent. I bet if you looked into this for Concord, you'd see similar problems.

When I lived in the city - and I lived less than a mile from the courthouse, police station, and major historical thoroughfare - the power was constantly going out all over. Street lights would go down. Roads were shitty. They weren't investing in their infrastructure, or many city programs. They now have a wonderful library director who impresses me so much with all of her efforts to get people encouraged in reading and education - and she's a wonderful friend and lady besides - but she and another mutual friend of mine who was a teacher for several years in Charlotte's schools say they have to deal with racist coworkers all the time. Literally, they are working in a building which has the most ridiculous mural in its auditorium portraying all kinds of dubiously racist crap detailing the "history" of Concord involving the native americans and blacks. And Jesus, of course, is painted into it. We pulled the screens down for the event, but we hosted Seth Andrews, the Thinking Atheist, in that room. Holy fuck that was hilarious.

But that's what you're dealing with in Concord - a very backwards, racist, insular people. They could be Muslim, it wouldn't matter. They just don't realize that they're frightened of being like those homeless people more than they're frightened of what God would say for them not being generous, because they've been sold a bill of goods that says this life is zero sum and there isn't enough to go around. That's what happens when you let psychopathic capitalists hold the reins of power. There's plenty of resources to go around in this state - it's just that several of the people in power gives absolutely no fucks about managing it properly.

Here's a stupid question...

What makes you d-bags so sure the 2 complaining neighbors are Christian? Looks like the town is divided left wing nut bags 48 to conservitives 50...

Plus their the fact that the church has been doing this for 18 months... What Christian lives next to a church and does not go to it? better yet what Christian goes to a church and not know it doubles as a homeless shelter for 18 months?!?!? Now ask yourself the same thing about some God hating nut bag... which is more likely to just have found out and complain?

1) A Christian who goes to a different church

2) stupid people

3) Concord isn't filled with "left wing nuts".

So let me get this straight. A Christian church does homeless services. Some unidentified residents complain (other than one Jeffery Collins who doesn't show up in Zabasearch). Therefore Christians are bad. Yeah, that's logical. Not.

Well, I gather from that, you would instantly attend a Roman Catholic or Greek Orthodox church if you were living next to it.

I'm not sure where you got the "therefore Christians are bad" part. Re-read the title of this thread, "Caught practicing Christianity".

It's a compliment, dude.

We admire the parts of the church body that do this kind of thing; we also recognize that often, even among members of the same church that's doing that sort of activity (let alone between members of rival churches), you have people nay-saying when it comes to real Christlike behaviors... they want the "weekend warrior" version, but when it comes to their own lives, well, "crime and loitering", baby!

And while all towns have some atheists in them, I highly doubt we just chanced upon two of the half-dozen that may be in that area. TSQ did a much better job of summarizing what's going on. In the south, which is highly Southern Baptist, you have the highest ratio of religiosity to income, and as she pointed out, they're all but programmed to detest anyone "beneath them" on the scale. That's not a religion thing, of course, it's a human thing... but in that part of NC, you can almost bet that almost everyone you meet is Christian of that evangelical sort, and those of us who've lived there know the contemptuous attitude of the barely-not-eating-dirt-poor lower middle class that's as part and parcel as religion, in that kind of area.

Drippy's bullshit about pointing out the number of Democrats in the area, notwithstanding... ironically, he proves my point, by suggesting that only superconservative assholes can be Christians, simultaneously failing to describe the actual South while highlighting exactly the type of attitude that makes us confident that THESE assholes, in the story, are Christians. Just not from that church. Wouldn't want to be caught with "the wrong crowd" and hamper your social mobility, y'see.
A Christian told me: if you were saved you cant lose your salvation. you're sealed with the Holy Ghost

I replied: Can I refuse? Because I find the entire concept of vicarious blood sacrifice atonement to be morally abhorrent, the concept of holding flawed creatures permanently accountable for social misbehaviors and thought crimes to be morally abhorrent, and the concept of calling something "free" when it comes with the strings of subjugation and obedience perhaps the most morally abhorrent of all... and that's without even going into the history of justifying genocide, slavery, rape, misogyny, religious intolerance, and suppression of free speech which has been attributed by your own scriptures to your deity. I want a refund. I would burn happily rather than serve the monster you profess to love.

I am the only Atheist I have heard of in Missouri, and I know that Missouri is more left wing then NC. NC public schools force religion on students.

Somehow I doubt the people who complained there were Liberal Atheists.
