I've heard loads of stories about people massively changing when they "find Jesus".

I've also heard that people in jail have a lot of incentives to "find Jesus" such as favourable treatment in parole hearings. I would hope that this kind of bullshit favouritism is on the decline.

I've looked everywhere and I can't find the fucker.

Frankly, I think Ben Carson is full of shit.  And I'm sure jesus has a lot to do with that.

And, of course people just don't think about the implications behind things like Carson's purported biography, like how is it a good thing that apparently the only thing stopping you from hammering your mother's skull in and shiving your friends over trivial things is your belief in an ever present chaperone watching you?

Evangelicals are weird cats, man.

I don't know about quelling any violent urges, but I've noticed that religion often suppresses the barriers that keep normal folks from being complete assholes.

It doesn't help that the old testament is about twice as big as the new, and the OT does not portray god as kind to people who don't follow him. Sometimes he's even cruel to his followers.
Jesus said that if people don't follow him that he will throw their butts into the fire.

Didn't the Simpson's do an episode on this? Sideshow Bob became a Christian in jail and he got favourable treatment. I think it's disgusting, of course,  and on top of that they believe they will just enter heaven and it won't matter how grievous a crime they committed. You could kill another human, purposefully, and still enter heaven. Why does got not hate killers? Hmm...maybe because Yaweh is a genocidal maniac.

If it's the "eternal torture" kind of hell, that's indeed worse. If it's the "destruction and cessation of existence" kind of hell, it would be preferable to heaven. It kind of depends on what someone believes hell is.

In the Bible there's a major difference between hell and the lake of fire.  Hell is temporary and the inmates will make bail on Judgment Day. Some might even get into the golden cube called New Jerusalem but only if they are members of the twelve tribes of Israel.  Hell then gets tossed into the lake of fire, along with all of the lost souls.

A lot of people's versions of hell are actually influenced by the Islamic and Zoroastrian versions of hell.  You don't want to end up in the Islamic hell.  It's a real horrible place of eternal torments of the worse kinds.  The biblical hell is very mild by comparison and it's temporary.  Most people actually end up in hell unless they end up in the sea or in death.  But those are also temporary.   That's according to the fairy tales but the Bible says that people shouldn't believe in Jewish fairy tales.
