RE: Intelligent Atheists: Who/What Was Jesus?
I lean slightly toward there having been a man named Yeshua who did some of the nonsupernatural things attributed to him and said some of the things he's been recorded saying, but the evidence is contextual and therefore slight. Some things in the Gospels seem intended to explain away inconsistencies between the man and the theology, which wouldn't be necessary with a completely fictional character. I put the odds of him being real and some of his teachings being foundational to Christianity at around 51%. And I think he was likely a follower of John the Baptist who broke off to start his own cult.
I'm not anti-Christian. I'm anti-stupid.

You are forgetting that there was not one xtianity until the proto-orthodox triumph in the 4th century at which time they set about stamping out all the variants.  I suggest Bart Ehrman's Lost Christianities for a fuller understanding of what was really going on before the church cobbled together their bullshit story.

Quote:Other than the plays themselves, we have precious little documentary evidence about Shakespeare. Among the meager items: a few signatures, a record of his marriage to Anne Hathaway, a strange three-page will, some papers detailing business transactions totally unrelated to writing, and just two portraits. No record of his schooling. Not one single manuscript in his own hand of even a fragment of his amazing body of work.

Someone raises a question, the establishment rallies around the status quo and you hide behind them like a scared child.  Grow up, Danny.  Or, at least try not to pretend that there is even an issue.  It makes you look foolish.

So, just as I thought you have no compelling evidence at all. Yeah we don't know shit about his early life, but that's not an argument against authorship. Most ancient people we don't know much about before they became important (with the obvious exception of royalty). Hell we don't even know how old Timothy Dalton is because he refuses to say, and he's still living!

Grow up and stop getting your "facts" from random internet websites. I asked specifically for English Literature Scholars, and couldn't give me any.

The fact that you, Wyrd, and a few other people buy the Mythist hypothesis simply speaks of your gullibility and lack of critical thinking skills.

The WIN/Gallup End of Year Survey 2013 found the US was perceived to be the greatest threat to world peace by a huge margin, with 24% of respondents fearful of the US followed by: 8% for Pakistan, and 6% for China. This was followed by 5% each for: Afghanistan, Iran, Israel, North Korea. -LINK

"That's disgusting. There were clean athletes out there that have had their whole careers ruined by people like Lance Armstrong who just bended thoughts to fit their circumstances. He didn't look up cheating because he wanted to stop, he wanted to justify what he was doing and to keep that continuing on." - Nicole Cooke

If jesus was real...

He would have been a crazy delusional jewish preacher that was suffering from heat stroke
and dehydration and he probably had mental issues because he was calling himself the son of god.
On top of that probably did some slight of hand tricks and people thought it was magic and then
other people got angry at him and you get the rest.
Atheism is a non-prophet organization join today.

Jesus was likely just a teacher of people who had a very small following while he was actually alive. After his death he probably gained a stronger following, and stories about him were exaggerated and embellished. It's probably why you see contradictions in the gospel. Some things may have even been incorrectly attributed to him. We have no real way of knowing who Jesus was.

Is Rake still trying to convince all the other Atheists to believe in real-guy-Jesus like his gullible ass does?

Why am I not surprised?

To the OP: Jesus Christ (the Bible character, as written) is most likely one of 3 things:

1. A fictional character based on and influenced by other, earlier mythical figures (my favorite answer).

2. A fictional character based on a conglomeration of real preachers from Jesus's time.

3. A fictional character based on a totally real guy named Ieshua von Nazareth who did and said everything that's in the gospels (more or less), except maybe the magic, I guess, since I'm atheist and don't believe in far-fetched tales unless they're the parts of the New Testament with no magic (Rake's favorite answer).

Any way you slice it, what you have there is a fictional character, even if that character is loosely based on a real guy.
Verbatim from the mouth of Jesus (retranslated from a retranslation of a copy of a copy):

"Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you too will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. How can you see your brother's head up his ass when your own vision is darkened by your head being even further up your ass? How can you say to your brother, 'Get your head out of your ass,' when all the time your head is up your own ass? You hypocrite! First take your head out of your own ass, and then you will see clearly who has his head up his ass and who doesn't." Matthew 7:1-5 (also Luke 6: 41-42)
