Poll for atheists - Do you still celebrate Christmas and why?

RE: Poll for atheists - Do you still celebrate Christmas and why?
I've noticed a lot of comments here about time spent with family over Christmas. I was going to wait a little longer into the season to post this, but it seems apropos:

This question always amuses me.

9/10ths of what Christians do on Christmas centers around family, friends, food, and the giving of gifts. How do atheists handle Christmas? By ignoring the other 1/10th that Christians partake in.

Oooooh, aaaahhhhh, minds blown.

Christmas doesn't even have to be about Jesus. Jesus doesn't really get mentioned in mainstream culture. You just have santa, a tree, presents, family time. It's a really neat holiday, I wouldn't trade that away just because I'm an atheist.

Of course.  Christmas has been a secular holiday forever.  It has nothing to do with religion.  Christmas trees, presents, mistletoe, reindeer, none of those things are religious.  Why wouldn't you celebrate it?
There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide mankind that cannot be achieved as well or better through secular means.

Well there you go. I wasn't really aware of the history of christmas, but I think I heard it was some sort of pagan holiday. I have no idea, either way it's like - there you go.

Four of my five kids (all atheists) celebrate Christmas. I have two granddaughters who were born on Christmas, so one year most of us had to celebrate a couple of days later so my daughter-in-law could get out of the hospital.

The other one is a fucking elitist. He's the most 'christian' Atheist I know. And by that I mean he thinks everything should be done his way. You know how some Christians get pissed when people don't say Merry Christmas, yeah well he gets pissed when people do. I haven't spoken to him in four years.

I think that celebrating Christmas in the UK has gone the wrong way for too long.

I do not like having Christmas Day as the day for preparing the massive meal for the family, and I don't like having the present opening in the morning of Christmas Day.

Christmas Eve should be the day for eating as the family are arriving, and after having eaten, everyone should open their presents before going to bed.

In this way, Christmas Day is lovely, relaxing, and loving day for everybody in the family. There is no pressure for anybody getting up early to open presents and preparing food that everyone is anticipating.
A polemical radical on anything and everything topical.

I read that title as "do you celebrate dead celebrities?" and I was about to say yes.
