Poll for atheists - Do you still celebrate Christmas and why?
#21
RE: Poll for atheists - Do you still celebrate Christmas and why?
When I used to live on my own, after one Christmas I couldn't be bothered taking the decorations down so I left them up all year ready for next year.

I'm not allowed to do that now. Apparently it makes it less special or something.

Not really, I enjoy the music and sometimes decorate a tree but that is about as far as I go.

But then again I don't "celebrate" any other holiday either including my own birthday. Oh, except for the Rose Parade from Pasadena, CA (but only on TV) and that may be out due to the talking heads that are conducted over the parade itself.

It's origins are multiple, do I care which version of it anyone else is attributing it to?  No, but I do enjoy the time spent.

I couldn't have said it better myself, apart from the It's Smile

Christmas, like any other winter solstice holiday, is mostly about bringing the family together to have a good time, good food, and probably presents. Schools close down, and most people are off work. Few better opportunities to reconnect with people you may not see very often.

For those in the know, Jesus' birthday wasn't originally on December 25th anyway. So why should I care?

Say what?

The first line in the bible says Jesus was born on 25th December in the year 0. Next to some cows or something. In a shed.

Pretty sure. I'll go check.

Yes. And Augustus decided that the year 0 was the perfect time to count everyone, and so he let the entire world travel to their birth places, which makes total sense.

Being a punctuation Nazi myself, I'm truly disappointed.

I'm going to take myself off to the bathroom, take a long look in the mirror and have a fucking stern word with myself.

@OP Yeah, to avoid a bloody insurrection.  I have alot of kids and they're all very much mine. They've already dug plenty of man-sized holes in my yard...it would be imprudent to antagonize them, they know where I sleep....and I'd rather not find myself sleeping in one of those holes, come December 26th.

Hasn't this topic been done to death?

In all seriousness, Christmas, as it is celebrated in the West, it is a largely secular holiday with very little connection to the Christian myth.

Almost everything about the holiday was born in pre-Christian paganism. The tree, mistletoe, giving gifts, decorating houses with lights, yule log, etc. All PAGAN. Saturnalia with some Norse paganism tossed in.

As far as I'm concerned, Christmas is a great excuse to celebrate with family and friends, give someone that 'perfect gift', eat great food, and have a couple of extra day off.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.
