I never like the phrase "Humans are the only species". I don't think we're as special as people like to think. You do make a good point that jewellery stores aren't rare, so they must all be able to get their product easily enough.

I don't mean "humans are the only species" in the deluded context that laypeople and especially the religious paint our species. I only mean that we have a complicated language, because of our more developed brains that allow us to create all these fucking bullshit labels that make the attempt to not only make us falsely think we are superior to other species, but make us stupidly think we are a separate species.

Yes it is determined by the market, much like the ability for your own gullibility that allows you to fall for a Nigerian lottery scam.
No I don't have to like it, which is why I am calling our current market bullshit. If it were pragmatic and not loaded by the sale of utopias of get rich quick, I would have no problem with it.

Gold is very rare in Earth's crust and is very expensive to harvest. It has extremely useful properties for electronics. It is the fourth-best conductor of electricity (behind silver, copper and aluminum) but doesn't tarnish. That makes it great for electronics connections in high-reliability applications. Gold-plated connectors are not subject to corrosion.
I agree with you regarding the superficial value of gold and diamonds but as others have pointed out, value in a capitalistic system is determined by what someone with the capital is willing to pay. It won't necessarily be driven by practicality or enlightenment.

I can live with the impractical side of my species, you have to to some extent. But our climate of global greed needs to be challenged because that lack of pragmatism is hurting resources we do need because of pollution and climate change.
I am thrilled for example, that you have Bill Gates openly siding with climate change scientists, and saying that the private sector is inept, the same sector he made his billions from. I think the key is to get more rich people globally like him to foster a better climate of business globally.
No unfortunately supply and demand do not have to be need based. Supply and demand can be depending on product, based on popularity and image. You will never get rid of all impractical crap, but we certainly can do better as a species work to better priorities. Much like the auto industry threw a fit over seat belts but learned they could make money selling them as a plus.

One's computer usually has some gold in its processor connectors and other critical parts. It takes acqua regia to dissolve gold, a mix of chloridric acid with nitric acid.

Brian, like someone has said, diamonds and other stones are only valuable because people create a demand. If almost no one wanted diamonds, prices would race to the bottom immediately. It's monopolized, and thus there's a big authority from producers to set prices as they please - And there's a steady, even if small demand.
Also keep in mind that many times you pay for the quality and beauty. I wanted a better razor than a disposable one, so I paid 40€ and got myself a beautifully chromed piece that will last a long time. I also wanted a better watch than my smartphone's, so I paid 100€ and got a really nice watch from a French brand. You pay for the quality, as a general rule.
