Most Tarantula bites are no worse than a bee sting, venom wise, however, the one inch fangs can put a damn good hurting on you and tetanus is a concern as with any puncture wound.
So can a big dog bite - It's probably the worst part of being bitten. Personally, I am more afraid of being bitten by wasps than by spiders - Not because wasps are necessarily dangerous, but they move fast and I'm afraid I can accidentally scare one off and it will bite me.

There's some species of tarantulas that are so passive you can practically cuddle them. One of them is the mexican redknee, the most used spider in movies.
