Is it logical to use logic in a illogical universe?

A thing which was not logical would not exist. By definition. It wouldn't count as reality. An 'illogical Universe' is a contradiction in terms.
"Philosophy would do well to desist from issuing any further injunctions about the need to re-establish the meaningfulness of existence, the purposefulness of life, or mend the shattered concord between man and nature. It should strive to be more than a sop to the pathetic twinge of human self-esteem. Nihilism is not an existential quandary but a speculative opportunity." - Ray Brassier

The statement, "the universe is illogical" has not been verified empirically. The day we find the universe is really doing some thinking, then we will be in a position to determine that. Until then, sweet dreams!

Nor could it be, since no fact or observation could ever be consistent with a violation of the laws of logic.

If something is no governed by the rules of reason, it is not an inferrence. The common statement about people thinking 'illogically' or being 'irrational' has no philosophical meaning.

I approve this message.
I can't remember which thread it was but we discussed the problems of an 'illogical' universe extensively there. was fun. We can't conceive a universe where logic cannot be applied but I think the fact that you can't come up with an example of a universe where you would not be able to make a logical deduction says something negative about the existence of 'illogical universes'. Can you come up with an example of a universe where logic is inapplicable?

I'm wondering if you mean you simply dislike the universe or can make no sense of it, or that logic only appears to work.
I am thinking here of The Captain Hook Affair by Humphrey Carpenter. Two children find themselves on a crooked world, where the inhabitants regard straight things as physically impossible. In attempting to demonstrate a straight line, one of them finds the physical limits of this world (the lumpy paper and crooked pencil) will not allow it. While straight exists conceptually, they were unable to demonstrate it.

I don't think he'll be back to answer that.

I thought the whole point of logic was to make sense of the non-sensical? If the universe is illogical then surely you'd just be using different logic in order to make it logical?

Religion manages to violate logic constantly, but the logic of it is that it was created by people who fear death, which, after a fashion (as the unknown), is logical.

I'm interested by the suggestion the universe is not logical, implying logic is in some way deficient. Going to his URL I see it's meant more in the manner of whether God can make paradoxes.
