The live news is terrifying.  Looks like they found the shooters, but had a shootout in a residential area.  It's still in progress.  I hope all the people in the houses right there are ok, and those cops too.

The shootout at the car was really hilarious.  The cops filled the car with lead, killing one guy and wounding another one.  The third guy jumps out of the car without a nick on him and flees the scene.  The cops didn't even get a description.  He's still on the run.  That has to be one of the greatest escapes of all time.  It'll make a dramatic movie.

Here you go.  Violent crime is down by about 50% (murder is down 54%, general violent crime down 51%) over the last 20 years, a very steep decline. In that same 20 years, mass shootings have increased more than 400%.  These are FBI statistics, I'm not just pulling numbers out of my ass.

The big question is....why?

Meanwhile, a just-released study finds that although the United States has just about 5 percent of the world's population, the country has 31 percent of the world's mass shooters. The reasons for these numbers are complex, researchers say, but the data suggest that the availability of guns, and perhaps the American obsession with fame, may be to blame.

The United States has more private gun ownership and more desire for fame than any other country in the world, said Adam Lankford, a criminal justice professor at the University of Alabama and author of the new research, presented Sunday (Aug. 23) at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association. 

I'm sure it is a deep, complex issue with many causes.  This seems plausible for some of the cause, at least.

America has a lot of violence because people have too much freedom.  Rigid totalitarian countries have lower crime rates because people don't have the freedom to be overtly violent.  If you want to reduce such violence in America impose a rigid police state and eliminate personal freedoms.  On top of that half of the population is simply bat shit crazy.

Press conference just finished. Two people that were in the vehicle are both dead; one was female. Authorities said the person running away is detained , but they can't confirm that person was involved in the earlier shooting. That person does not seem to have been in the vehicle.

Of course it was hilarious.  The shooters were white guys.  It's amazing that one was actually killed.  Remember the crazy cop that jumped up on the hood of the car with the black man and woman in it and filled them full of lead?  They were unarmed.   So here the cops are with a gang on white killers and barely manage to kill one of them ten feet in front of them.  And they let one escape without getting and description or even giving the guy a paper cut.  It's triple hilarious!!!
