That's why I said it's considered immoral, but there is no prison sentence for being an adulterer. You will get your ass sued, and lose at least half of your stuff.

It's also possible to initiate a divorce with adultery as the cause, and to gain the legal high ground during divorce proceedings. No, they won't usually lock you up, but they will give your house and money to your spouse. If it's punishable by law, it's effectively illegal.

I don't think it's meant to be punishment so much as making sure one spouse isn't leaving the other with nothing. That's why you typically get half. Not everything. The house goes to the one who will raise the kids, and the other spouse needs to pay child support. The alternative would be forcing them to remain married.

When people say the constitution is somehow modeled on christian laws or even worse, on the 10 commandments, they are being totally ignorant.

Truthfully, religion did influence the laws of society simply by the books they chose to add/keep in their sacred text and which they decided to toss. It was a way to make the society of their choosing. It isn't as if there was some perfect society set down for any of us. Instead the different cultures found the readings they wanted to keep that would mold the image of their perfect society and then used religion to make it happen.

The problem is the society they chose wasn't perfect and treated large segments of that society as less then human because those were the rules of the day. Many religions have been ok with changing parts of them as time as gone on but they still hold on to the basic tenant and continues to form our societal makeup. Hence leads to our problem. Morals and honesty do not come from religion as we can see by looking at the church

Religion did indeed influence the laws of society, which is why we are having to fix them right now.

Adulterers (especially male ones) routinely get the shit end of the stick concerning divorce proceedings. Certainly more so than in a no-fault divorce. Whether or not it's intended as a punishment or deterrent to adultery (or at least getting caught at it), it still effectively acts as one.

Humanity grew up hand in hand with religion.  The US is what, 5 years into sort of being secular?  And now we're like "Psh, we coulda done all of history without religion, no problem."

That's quite the claim.

I mean religion's done it's fair share for society, like build the laws and morality our society is built on".

Four words for you Law Code of Hammurabi. Hammurabi's code was a secular law code, and one of the first examples of a written constitution. It laid down many laws which winged their way into the bible (e.g. an eye for an eye) and many which did not (presumption of innocence at trial).

Even if the laws of society were built under the moniker of the Church, that doesn't mean I want the Church involved, it doesn't mean the Church is responsible for creating morality.

5 years into sort of being secular?? What?? US has one of the most secular legal systems on the planet. We are the founders of secular government.
