I was near such a device not too long ago, and it was just really really tough to be around it. The large diesel motor, the noise, and the long time for it to spool up, and later, to spin down, and it was really disturbing.
You can't help but think about that sort of thing the entire time it's on. How that kid did not have an intense fear/respect of the thing is astonishing.
{disclaimer: I have a little one, but the design is very different, and I feel it is a substantially safer machine to operate}

I prefer to exist in a bubble of reality where no such thing occurred.

That question will be asked in the inevitable legal action.
The North Carolina workman's compensation law covers the incident. His family will get screwed on the death benefit since he had only one day of work. They will get $3,500 for funeral expenses. From an employer perspective an employee should never start work until the employer can take out a life insurance policy on him. Those used to be tax deductible for the employer. If the kid didn't have his own life insurance policy his family will be on the short end of the stick.

On the bright side, the family didn't have to spring for a full-sized coffin.

Not in this case, but another one (yes, this seems to happen with depressing frequency) I saw the results posted on the internet.
While disturbing to think about, seeing the HR really wasn't all that disturbing as nothing was recognizable as being what it was.
Nevertheless, I'm not posting the pic nor the (thankfully brief) autopsy report.

The first aircraft accident I worked was a 2-seat F-16 which pranged at 500 knots. Wreckage was found as far away as the base hospital one mile from the crash site. The biggest pieces any of us saw were one foot in a combat boot, and a slab of three ribs.

Man that's fucking scary. I remember being a dumb kid just starting out in the work force. I worked at a shady plastic factory, but because of my inexperience I didn't quite grasp the level of shadiness. Once during a shut down they told me to clean my cutting machine. Basically, plastic was pushed through a mold down into this long skinny pool of water to cool it, and I was at the cutter rolling the plastic after each cut, which cut at a set time. So I'm cleaning my machine and noticed some clippings around the cutter that needed cleaned up. I reached in and wiped it all out. Then the cutter came down on its set time.... Where my fucking hand just was. I was dumb, naive, and too trusting that these people knew what they were doing. I assumed they did a full lock-out/tag-out and I could have lost my hand.
I can't remember where this verse is from, I think it got removed from canon:
"I don't hang around with mostly men because I'm gay. It's because men are better than women. Better trained, better equipped...better. Just better! I'm not gay."
For context, this is the previous verse:
"Hi Jesus" -robvalue

My dad is a sheet metal worker. One day he heard a yelp and rushed to a fellow worker who was holding a hand with one less finger, my dad asked him how he'd done it "like this he said" swiping his hand at the machine he was using for shaping the metal losing another finger. Shock makes your brain not function.
