Ours got up to 27 pounds and the vet really had a fit about it. (at 24 months of age, the cat weighed 24 pounds !)  Bought an automatic feeder, and got the cat down to 13 pounds in 2 years.  He's not a happy cat anymore, but his hygiene is way better.

The vet was really firm the cat would become diabetic and have joint issues, so no choice about the dieting, but the cat has NEVER adjusted to the reduced rations.  We have to keep him from the other cat as I truly believe he would attempt to eat him.

It was 'funny' the first week of dieting, the cat seemed unaware his new discomfort had anything to do with the kibble cutback, and then one day, he made the correlation, and his attitude has suffered ever since.  He truly and sincerely wants to be a fat cat, and he apparently will never change.

This isn't our cat, but actually pretty close fur-wise.  This one was 31 pounds, so a little bigger.
