I don't quite get what you mean here. "Worth a damn" as in 'why try?' or as in some kind of intrinsic value?

He spent less time navel gazing and more time living his life than most people I've met.

Sentience in a double edged sword. It means we can understand and enjoy much. However,it also allows formation of the conceit that we should and do matter, not only as a species,but as individuals.

The purpose of life is itself. If you lack sand to accept that,try religion or feel free to leave at anytime.

Life itself has no purpose, we're just a collection of parts assembled in an above mediocre species forming groups called societies. What makes things worth anything (even a damn) is whatever value you and the rest of humanity gives it. I bother because I care.

The only things we care about ultimately is conscious experience perhaps. Because "value" and anything being "good", "bad" or whatever at all, makes no sense without a conscious being to add such descriptions. Nothing can be "good" or "bad" without conscious experience.
