Wrong thread... oops
The GOP isn't paying attention to recent history.
In 2012, Obama won the election and a large part of why he won was because the quasi-racist talk coming from the Republicans really mobilized the hispanic vote. That doesn't bode well for the candidate who started his campaign by calling Mexicans drug dealers and rapists. I can see a repeat of 2012, not to mention he's made more than a few comments that have pissed off another Democratic voting bloc: women. And I think the party elites realize he can't win the general election, which is why they want Ted Cruz to win. Unfortunately, Trump has enough popular support that the only way Cruz can really win would be to basically ignore the Republican voters. It becomes a lose/lose situation for them and I can't help but think, they need to start thinking towards the 2020 election and how they're going to avoid falling into a similar trap.

Actually, the Republican establishment was talking about the Hispanic problem the day after the 2012 election. They knew they would have to fix that. The one who has hasn't learned is Trump.
What the establishment missed is the abandonment of the establishment. The fact that it took Romney the entire primary to put away a field of extremely weak and fringe candidates should have been a red flag. That's what they dropped the ball on.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

Yeah, I think that's some of what both parties are going to have to look at in the aftermath of this election. Both parties have candidates with tremendous populous support and less institutional support. There are two insiders (Clinton and Cruz) against two popular outsiders (Sanders and Trump). Whichever party loses will probably address some of those issues within the next four years, and since the Republicans seem to be the ones in more trouble because of it, they'll probably find a way to harness that anti-establishment feeling into the next candidate. And if the Democrats don't take that lesson, 2020 could be a big win for Republicans.

He will still carry Texas. Trump could carry some of the Eastern Blue States which could put him over the top. |
