I probably came off yesterday as having no sympathy or concern for transgender people.  Nothing could be further from the truth, and I would favor having unisex restrooms where a person could enter and lock the door behind them.  I think Gemini hit it on the head though, when she talked of being harassed while in the men's restrooms and said it is a common problem for transgenders.  I feel certain that the fear of most people who oppose allowing physical men use the women's restrooms is harassment rather than rape.  I'm sure that over the years there have been plenty of men in women's restrooms dressed as women and I've probably unknowingly shared restrooms with women.  But the NC law would make it illegal just to be there, therefore discouraging men or women from entering for the purpose of harassment.  Also, there is plenty of harassment in public restrooms as many, many gay men have been arrested for propositioning and lewd conduct with adults and children in restrooms.  This law doesn't address that problem, but it does demonstrate the kinds of things men will do in public restrooms.

If we're concerned about the comfort and safety of transgenders, then why are we not concerned about it for straight people as well?  It's not just a christian thing either.  The first thing you guys want to do when someone disagrees with you is to call them a christian bigot.

It matters because if a man thinks he is a woman, but has a penis, why can't he/she use the men's urinal to pee?

First off your genitals DO NOT define your sexual preference or sexual identity, the brain does.

Secondly, Gemini in an earlier post already said why, if she uses the women's bathroom, she gets harassed and with both bathrooms she has to fear the risk of being assaulted because of asshole bigots. 

This is really fucking stupid. Gay men have always shared bathrooms with straight men. While assholes still condemn them there are not widespread demands that gays have a separate bathroom. Same with lesbians, they share restrooms with heterosexual women all the time. I have no doubt everyone here has been in a bathroom with someone gay at some point in their lives.

And again, the least of anyone's worries as far as risk of peeping or molestation or rape is going to be a transgendered. Especially in a high traffic public bathroom. Peeping and molestation and rape are far more likely to be committed by heterosexual men and far more likely NOT to happen in a bathroom, especially not a high traffic bathroom.

This harassment didn't happen in a bathroom. The sick fuck actually didn't touch her so no crime was committed but he did have priors and hadn't realized he had run into her before. He was asking very inappropriate questions about the underwear she was wearing, that is why she chased him out.

You are absolutely correct. It never occurred to me that any mentally-stable law-abiding person would use the bathroom of the opposite sex. I always assumed that if a man went into a women's bathroom he would be reported and escorted out. My guess is that most creeps and criminals would have made the same assumption. Social norms proscribed normative behavior and provided recourse when someone felt his or her privacy had been violated.

I can accept that cultural norms change. Many fears are irrational. At the same time I recognize that some people are immoral and criminal. Removing the stigma provides cover for such deviants. The situation is similar to calling people "Islamaphobes" for recognizing that terrorist attacks are overwhelmingly perpetrated by Muslim extremists. I may be more likely to be struck by lightning than blown up by a suicide bomber but I don't stand under flagpoles during storms. However, the stigma of being called a bigot for having a modicum of vigilance is now so strong that criminals will disguise themselves in Burkas because they know that people will intentionally look away and consciously ignore them.

I listen to AFR every day when I'm picking the girls up from school.  Love that program, a real trendsetter for christian bigotry.  I always know what to expect on the forums.
(I suspect that many of our posters lifted their talking points from precisely the same place as the host - it would be eery if they all had the -exact same- batshit thoughts independently....)
