I was just wondering, about the atheist opinion on retards.

From what I have heard, atheists do not care for retards or people with disabilities generally.

I know this because many of the babies in the wombs of non-believing women end up being aborted just for being retarded. Why do you think you see so few mongoloids anymore? Its because doctors can now take a picture of a womans womb and know if the baby is a mongoloid or not. If it is, it sadly ends up getting chopped up .

I don't understand that impulse. I believe everyone is worthy of love and affection even if they are different.

What do you think about retards and are they worthwhile people?

I haven't heard that all Christians are trolls, but on gay, liberal, and atheist sites, I've noticed a tendency. You didn't come to ask, you came to accuse. I suggest you look at the Christian population.

So obviously atheists are not the only parents in the U.S. aborting after screening.

That said, the conclusion that atheist are less likely to care for born mentally retarded or otherwise handicapped people does not follow from your premise, even if it were true. The most secular states in the country provide the best care for the mentally disabled. I would be happy to discuss the ethics of aborting fetuses with indicators for Downs syndrome, but only if you are willing to admit that it is practiced by Christians as well as atheists, and that there is no indication whatsoever that atheists treat living mentally retarded people worse than Christians do.

Today is Sunday, why aren't you in church? Or are you posting this from a church pew? People like you are partly why I decided I'm an atheist. Hypocrisy and a judgmental attitude not to mention ad hominem arguments and talking in circles won't win any atheist over to theism.

Okay, okay.  I'm feeling slightly magnanimous this evening, so I'll give you another answer, one that's more in the spirit of your post.  AA better analogy would be you repeatedly shining a large flashlight directly into our eyes while....

* not understanding that we actually can see just fine without it;

* not grasping the concept that a bright light shone directly into one's eyes does more harm than good;

* thinking we don't really mean what we say when we politely ask you to point your flashlight elsewhere (see points 1 and 2);

* not understanding that it won't make any difference if we sit and hear you ramble on about how a flashlight shining into your eyes changed your life for the better and it'd do the same for us if we only allowed it to hit our eyes for a little longer, perhaps from a different angle than we're used to (see point 3); and finally...

* not grasping the concept that, even if the company that manufactured your flashlight printed explicit instructions for its user to go out and shine it in other people's faces, you following those instructions are still unacceptably irritating, and do NOT, in fact, deserve immunity from criticism simply because the flashlight manufacturer says it's okay. Thats what I think atheists are missing. They kind of hate pain and suffering, and think its bad all the time. Pain and suffering isn't a country dance, but it can help you be close to God. In all your pain and sorrow, you can say to yourself "Jesus, I know this is nothing compared to what you went through on calvary. Please help and be with me."

Then you can keep your blood god.

I need a straight answer.

As a Christian I think the retarded are to be loved and cherished, and think its horrific that a woman would think of aborting her retard baby.

What do you all as atheists believe?

As an atheist, I'm not convinced that theists have met their burden of proof regarding god claims. That's the only platform on which I stand as far as my atheism goes.

As a person, I think that everyone has a basic intrinsic level of societal acceptance and value. I also think that a woman has the right to decide what happens to her reproductive system.
