Yes, it certainly can be. The Crusades and ISIS and 9/11 is living proof of that. In fact, 99% of the wars were fought over either religion or resources. Religion can brainwash you, and turn you into someone who won't listen to reason. The thing I hate most about religion is that it teaches you to only accept one side of the argument as the true answer, and to ignore everything else. That to me is literally brainwash in the name of an imaginary figure.

And who's doing the brainwashing? Religion or the ones imposing it? Where did religion arise from? No, religion in and of itself is not evil.
