Pretty sure her point was that they cannot abandon him, but they can make his life a living hell.

Every action we take in life has a cost. Have you run a C/BA on your advice?

However, given the choice, the absolute choice, I will always choose going against my parents if it means I am right.

Parents are not always right.

How many of us have grown up with parents informing us of what we must do?

Fuck parents.  Rather, rely upon one's self.

It's all good to be right. 'Tis better to understand the ramifications of flaunting that fact. Never make a power play when you don't own most of the power.

Quid pro quo.

I have lived to long and have dealt with too much bullshit in my life to allow others to have any control over how I live.

... and I've lived too long and dealt with too much bullshit to not examine the limits of my own sphere of control and act accordingly.

Advice is easy to give when you're not the one dealing with the fallout.

I don't have to be fifteen to know how I felt when I was that age.

Age allows one thing, the ability to gain knowledge younger people are too fucking stupid to understand or accept.

After all, us older fossils have already gone through it, experienced it.

... and we give advice from our current perspective, forgetting what it feels like to rely on someone else for a semblance of a sane life. If we're going to turn this into an age-pissing contest, we can just call Mini in and that old fuck will have the best advice by your logic.

But what you're not considering, I think, is that as we age, our memories turn this way and that, and our "Ishouldhavesaids" turn into "wisdom" that isn't actually supported by experience.

Did you actually tell your parents to fuck off when you were 15? If so, how'd that work out for you?

You're missing the point. It's so easy to say "rebel young one, cross to the dark side and tell your mother what a stupid cunt she really is" when you're not the one who has to face the consequences. Parents cannot legally kick a minor child out of the home. They can, however, prevent the minor from leaving. They can take all of his things and throw them out. They can provide him with three pink jumpsuits and 3 pair of undies, a cot, and a light weight blanket. They can limit is electricity usage to only light bulbs and and the water heater. They can take the door to his bedroom. They can refuse to allow him to look at colleges or apply to them. They can completely cut him off from the outside world. They can force him to listen to them reading bible passages for 7 hours each day.

That is my point. There's no use in stirring up trouble when you're 15 and your parents most certainly have the upper hand.

My father pinned me up against the wall by my neck, giving me the stare of death.

I have told my father what a fucktard he is.

Have you?

And your experience is probably not a perfect analog for his life.

For a 15 year old with hyper fundamentalist parents who can and will isolate him from his peers, deny him medical care and care for his mental health issues, and who lives in a state where religious parents literally have near carte blanche to do whatever the fuck they want with regards to the health and safety of their child under the guise of religious freedom, maybe the best advice is not to nuke his relationship with his parents.

Fuckin' a right.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

How old were you when you told him that? Did you have your own income? Were you free to walk away, financially? You're giving advice to a teenager who doesn't have income -- meaning he doesn't have liberty.

My father wasn't a fucktard. I disagreed with him often enough, and we tussled once, but even by fifteen I'd learnt the value of biding my time.

Your mileage seems to vary. I wouldn't advise any teen to burn bridges he needs to cross daily, myself. Of course, I'm not as smart as you seem to be.
