Is there any point to those letters? Seem like a waste of ink to me. Some say Allah is deliberately trying to confuse people with those letters.
By the way, some of the Tafsir scholars died before the Hadith were codified into the collections we know today (e.g. Kutub al-Sittah for Sunnis). It's plausible to assume that disagreements they had aren't only due to Hadith because the Hadith we know today didn't exist in their time. e.g. al-Bukhari hadn't even been born when Ibn Abbass was writing.

Well the argument goes something like this: "Allah out those combinations of letters in the Quran to be like "Ha! You can't know everything. I put these letters in and you can't make what the mean." it's supposed to be humbling, apparently.

The Quran, Islam, cannot be true because it was Mohammed who introduced the Quran to this world.
Islam was spread by the sword.
Forced conversions and Jihad are void of Divine reason and as such they are against God's nature.
God has interacted with us through the "Logos"* and Logos means Reason and Word, not sword.
The sword is simply not part of God's sunnah.
The god you believe in? He's just as real as allah. All the gods are creations of human imagination, reflections of our worst impluses and basest desires. That's why they tend to act like spoiled children.

1-Hadith based
2-Opinion based

I actually think opinion based Tafsir are just as bad. People will be biased by their prejudices and people who have influenced the person will have made their mark. The time period and society people are writing is also important to consider.
And I'll say it again: This is why Allah needs to release a volume of Tafsir. Not only would it clear any doubts and disagreements, such an event would cause me to recite Shahada right away. I would love it if Allah release some reading material in English.
