UK to leave EU

They exist to provide a check/balance against the Commons and it's good to see that the process works, even if they're not going as far as their Royal Mandate (*ptui) allows. I disagree that they should be populated with actual Lords and unelected religious folks however they're the only option there is. I posted previously about the sad irony that they're the best hope for protecting the UK from the tyranny of the majority.

I still don't think a 'proper' Brexit will happen. Brexiteers will be pissed off and the remainers will be as well but not as much.

Did anyone else see the pics from the first reading in the Lords? May sitting there on her 'throne', overseeing the session like a fucking Disney Wicked Queen?

May Wrote:Don't you give me any grief my pretties or I'll hit you with the power of my ill-gotten riches!!

It was dictatorial, fascist. I didn't think it was possible but May's an actual venomous harridan, ill-willed and proud of it, a double-speaker of the first order, careless and neglectful, narcissistic with a self-serving, yellow streak a mile wide, unelected and gleeful of her unearned position, rich and utterly dismissive of the struggles of the 'prole'.

I don't hate many people but she's one of them. I wish her personal suffering in retribution for the people she's already killed, remorselessly, and to prevent further death.

I think we're going to see the worst Brexit possible and I think that Mavis are going to do it deliberately to further their own causes. They clearly yearn for some sort of idealised Victorian economic model where 'common-folk' are happy for the scraps that are flung to them by the wealthy and powerful. They look for an even more draconian US far-right Republican model with added tax breaks for mates.

And you know what, I don't understand why so many people are happy about that! I really don't. I mean, I understand why people can be fearful of immigration, seemingly-unanswerable power structures and the like however I don't understand why they would want the solution to be worse than the problem! If a doctor told you that they could cure your diabetes by killing you, would you accept? It scares me to my core.

Calm down, she was just watching it. I don't like May either but there's no need to start ranting on about her being a "fascist" because she definitely is not one of those.

That's fair enough, but I am pretty certain she is some kind of ancient demon wearing human skin.
I think Boris accidently summoned her during some Satanic sex romp.

Ah yes, good ol' Boris. I had completely forgotten about him.

He would have made an entertaining Prime Minister.

I would normally apologise for this sort of behaviour but I think it's justified. I'm normally calm but her behaviour has me boiling.

The implication of her presence in the reading was clear. She wasn't just watching, she wanted to influence the debate by serving as a reminder that she's running the show. I think I posted before that she probably did herself no favours as a typical reaction by Lords to 'commons' telling them what to do is to react provocatively. We'll just have to see.

As for 'fascist', I think that's also deserved. Compare her behaviour to that of politicians who are recognised as fascists. There are too many parallels. She claims to be neoliberal but I think she's tipped over the edge in order to try and save her own skin.

What parallels?

I'm just not seeing it.

Off the top of my head: her misrepresentation of socio-political issues to misdirect responsibility and accountability to political rivals, including those in her own party; her targetting and demonisation of the vulnerable, foreigners and social demographics that are in ideological opposition to her as scapegoats for 'society's ills'; her manipulation of right-wing press and opposition to independent/left-wing press in order to promote bigotry and social division; her constant inaction to oppose certain social issues arising from her political decisions (e.g. rising hate crimes against ethnic/religious/sexual minorities); her disassembly of state functions (e.g. NHS, prisons, social care, child welfare services); her increasing state militarisation; her use of police as governmental enforcers; the so-called Snoopers' Charter... There are more and I'm sure I could find even more if I delved a little.

I can't help but feel that if you haven't noticed these, since you obviously pay attention, how much attention has been diverted away from her politics by Brexit. I could suggest that she's sometimes using Brexit as a smokescreen to hide other activities...

I have noticed most of those, except the manipulation of media and militarisation of police. I haven't noticed her opposition to independent media either and I speak as a firm supporter of a free press.

Look, I don't agree with the label of "fascist" but you will rarely find me defending her. She is an awful, unelected old hag and it would take a lot to change my opinion of her, so absolutely no disagreement there. I am no Conservative.

As for the Snoopers Charter in particular, that's something I have been following very carefully as the subject of mass surveillance interests me.

Encrypt everything.
