Texas looks to follow UK's example

There's a popular myth that when Texas was made a state, it was written into the agreement that they can secede any time they want.


In 1869, however, the Supreme Court ruled that the Union is insoluble by the actions of a state. Essentially, states do not have the right to secede. Texas has no avenue by which they can grant authority to such a vote, so if they did hold it, the federal government would have itself a laugh and go back to trying to fellate Hillary into the Oval Office.


Even if they did, though, they'd be even more fucked than England. England at least has its own currency, and a long history of being an actual country and having relationships with other countries. Texas has none of those things.

It doesn't benefit any of the red states to secede because they're the one that has the most people on welfare.

What's likely to happen in a what-if scenario is America economically crushing the state that left to make an example out of them and then they'd just rejoin the union.

Texas pays more into Federal coffers than it receives. I'm on my phone now, but will link an interactive chart when I get home and such is easier to do.

Maybe, but then again maybe not. Texas is conservative and Christian on the surface, but it's also a big place with a growing level of diversity that doesn't really jibe with the state's public image

This. I work for a Texas-based company, as a result I know a lot of Texans. They're not nearly as much a monolithic group as reputation suggests. There certainly is a powerful culture of the overly churched however, and so I would not rule out the possibility.

This.  I work for a Texas-based company, as a result I know a lot of Texans.  They're not nearly as much a monolithic group as reputation suggests.  There certainly is a powerful culture of the overly churched however, and so I would not rule out the possibility.

You know, I can only go by what they send into congress - Louie Gohmert anyone? - and what they elect as governors. I know too few Texans and never have been in that state.

Going out on a limb here, but it probably shows the same picture every other region in the world shows. A stark contrast between urban and rural, well off and poor, disenfranchised and hopeful.
