For a long while, Tekkit was dead, no support (plus there was an issue of the mod owners not asking permission from the mod designers). FTB picked it up and improved on it. Then the Tekkit crew got off their asses and updated some shit...but FTB has -always- been the better mod pack.

As far as creating a new world (the superflat one), is there anything in particular you want me to look for or do once I'm in the world?

Hit f3 once you're loaded in. Should bring up the debug, and that will tell us how much memory is allocated. There are other ways to do this, ofc, but this one will be familiar to you, since the game is, lol.
(and the graph movement will tell you if your cpu is spiking, even if it won't tell you why)

But I like all of them.... that Unabridged pack has over 267 mods in it. It even has NEI and NER and like holy shit... there's so much to do with it. It's incredible. There's furniture and all sorts of things... like bees... tons and tons of bees!

Do you want me to adjust my RAM first by following the instructions from the minecraft forum link you sent or just go to the game itself and see what it's using now?

I know, I know.....and bees are the best mod in the whole damned game. Total mad scientist gene lab mode engaged. It would be nice to know what it's using before you mess with it, - and whether or not it crashes on a superflat low quality low render distance map...because if it does, we can solve your problem without any messing around or heartache. Video Card.

I read something about that from the Unabridged description. They said they only picked the best ones that wouldn't compete with other mods for a ton of resources.

By the way, thank you for helping me with this. I really appreciate it. I had posted on the ATLauncher forums but received no help at all. Looked through many of their posts and a lot of people weren't getting assistance with their issues either.
