It's a real bugger... I used to always look at prices in USD and think I could afford it cos of the exchange rate, but now I think those days are gone and it's coming closer and closer to the pound

AHHHHH no.
Xiaomi comes with its brand of android, MIUI.
ASUS comes with some bloatware, but I don't know exactly if it's anything worse than Samsung's. And we know how Samsung is the king of the bloatware.
If you want truly bloatware free stuff, you have to go nexus. Or some of those even crappier chinese tablets whose manufacturers don't even bother with bloatware... they don't bother with firmware updates, either... so... 
At least Xiaomi updates their stuff.

That Lenovo isn't half-bad... specs just barely making over the threshold... sucks that it's stuck on KitKat...
Oh no.... it did get an upgrade to Lollipop, but it didn't go smoothly....

I guess the main thing is just access to Google Play... unrestricted and open development... as opposed to anything too locked in and 'quality controlled' like Amazon or Apple. And they're probably all rootable if you're willing to take the risk of 'bricking' it, but I've never done it so far... so I guess being rooted is not that important but it was cool that my first tablet was and gave me more of an insight into the inner workings of Android.
