Because the fear has been indoctrinated into some people. Logically knowing it isn't true often isn't enough to fight the effects of deeply ingrained psychological programming.

It's just one of the reasons I'm against indoctrination.

I am not now, nor have I ever been afraid of "hell".

If anything scares me, it's the potential for living eternally in heaven with a bunch of religious pricks.
