Hey Nutter, I've got an old Art effects rack and foot controller from the mid 90's. An Art SGE Mach II and X-15 foot controller. I bought it new at the time but soon gave up playing the guitar even though I had been playing for many years previously since the age of 13. I was wondering whether it's completely obsolete now or whether I could still use it for home recording. I used it at the time with a Fostex 4 track.

I wouldn't say it's exactly obsolete, but - depending on your recording setup and software - you may find it to be more trouble than it's worth. You could probably use some of the effects on it - especially for jamming, or playing live, but many will sound very dated, especially distortions, because simulation of analog gear has come a long way since the 90's. Something like Line6 Pod, which you can pick up second-hand for ~£60 will give you much better sounds - and it has MIDI so you could probably get your foot controller to work with it (or any other MIDI enabled effect processor), because MIDI has been the same good old MIDI since the 80's.

For computer-based recording purposes, I'd say it's generally best to keep guitars as dry and clean as possible and add effects during mixing, because there's multitude of plugins available, that offer more flexibility, variety and better quality than 90's digital gear.

I can't really bring myself to part with my guitar equipment. I have a Marshall JCM900, and two Fender Jap strats (HM and 62 reissue). If I had loads of time and money I'd buy a Fender amp. Although last time I went into a shop to buy an all-valve Fender amp I came away with a really crappy looking and ancient hand-wired all valve bedroom amp that was the perfect sound that I had been looking for all these years and yet another pink strat. The amp was a precursor to a Vox AC30 although not made by Vox.

A couple of years later I met a man who is now my husband and he has a couple of Jap Strats as well. Between us we have three pink strats (and three 62 re-issues).

I'm more of a Gibson-man myself, although my main guitar for the past 15 years has been Ibanez SDGR 5-string bass. I also have an acoustic Ovation 5-string bass guitar and a tiny DeAshbory fretless bass with silicone strings. I also have a cheap, old and battered Chinese Fender acoustic guitar and an Epiphone SG electric.

Thanks Nutter. It doesn't have any distortion. I wasn't ever going to use an approximation of overdrive when I had a genuine all valve amp Good point about recording a dry signal and applying the effects in the processing. I suppose it's no different to digital photography in that regard now. It might work well with my electric mandolin I suppose if I plug it into the PA. But in reality I always prefer natural tones so would likely not use it.

I generally preferred the truest tone that I could get with my amp and guitar and eventually removed all pedals from my setup, even my Craybaby wah wah. If I had been prepared to modify my guitars I'd have probably disconnected the volume and tone controls as well. The tone of a humbucker connected straight to the jack plug is pretty awesome. I did that to my first ever guitar because it was a complete dog.

I always fancied a Gibson but they were always too expensive. My rock days are behind me now though but I would love a semi-acoustic Gibson. I've often contemplated learning a load of jazz chords. It's basically like learning a whole new instrument. Still haven't decided whether I'd go for a fretless acoustic bass or not.

I need one of those drones too.  You can use the ir camera modules to diagnose nutrient/water deficiencies in field crops top down, with a handy digital reference.  When we finalize our civilian drone use policies a few people are gonna print billions in that bubble.  Realtime drone crop management. One guy with a service van could work an entire county. Link him up to an inbound national center, combine consultation with inventory and custom application....generate and file any required paperwork. All farmer John has to do is press a button on his smartphone.

I would love to buy a piano and resume the lessons I regret quitting when I was young. I would also love to buy a wooden dummy for Wing Chun practice.

Of course, I value my balls more than pianos or wooden dummies and am pretty sure I'd lose them if I didn't first purchase some 'priority items' my wife has in mind.

Oh I once had private lessons in Wing Chun for about a year. I think the instructor became somewhat lazy in the end. He just got me learning this same Kata with a wooden dummy for the last few months. Very last lesson before I moved I just videoed him doing it instead. I've completely forgotten all the moves now. I was always wanting a free standing punch bag to practice my Thai boxing.

This is the cool thing about jazz chords for keyboard, you just add a note or two to the right hand and change your bass note on the left hand.
If I lived in the same country as you other musos I'd be over for a jam.
I'd love to learn how to use all that equipment you two have been talking about.
The only word I recognised was MIDI. :-)

When the market gets better I will sell my half duplex in the best area in town and buy a shitty house in the country.
Then I will have a proper backyard.
I've completely run out of space for gardening.
I want to have a fruit orchard and ducks and chickens and goats and pigs and a shed and a dam.....and a mini cold weather rainforest.
