But we don't know for sure if he was a combatant or not. The group he was alleged to have been a member of has denied it and the executioners haven't exactly provided proof.

Meh, they have every reason to deny it.  Do we trust them anymore than we trust the shitbirds that did the beheading?  This is kindof what I was angling for, though...when a person uses the term combatant the first order of business becomes ruling that out or casting doubt on it.  It must be relevant, it must be important.  If it weren't...there'd be no need to debate it.

The term combatant comes cheap these days. Especially when you want to justify the unjustifyable.

So, excuse, but if anyone uses that term today, after a child or granny is killed, I'm more inclined to take a dump on their face than actually give them credit.

It's not as if children and old women can't fire an ak, or lob a grenade abaris.  They can, and often do. Especially in conflicts like the one in Syria. Those are the folks you really have to watch out for, imo. They're great weapons, both on the field and in the larger pr war. I'm not asking you to justify what they did..I don't think it's justifiable. I'd just shoot an enemy combatant. I wouldn't behead a POW. I'm asking you whether or not considering the child as an enemy combatant changes your view of the incident, not whether you think it justifies it.

Perhaps an oversimplification of things, but having spent time in the middle east, it really feels that Islam is at strong odds with most of the world. Not a doomsayer but do think the day is coming that a serious conflict between Islam and everyone else is on the horizon. Whether this young man was a combatant or not, the thought was that he would be one less potential adversary in the future. By no means am I advocating preemptive child beheading.

Think this is a natural thought that could be applied to many. Drug dealers, drunk drivers, vegans pushing tofu...

No, since in other regions of the world there are efforts being made to turn child soldiers. And by that I don't mean kill them but take them in an offer them an education and psychological treatment. I guess, everyone of us knows how easy it is to influence a child to act in a certain way. Be it by pressure or be it by the charade of offering a community.

We all know the ultimate goal of the Islamic world today; to destroy Israel. They could do at any moment, however, with the relations that Israel has with the Americans, they wouldn't stand a chance. However, should the Americans cut ties with Israel, then Israel would be no more.

Off-topic,

I know that the western civilisation has done quite a bit of work over the centuries through the crusades, to Saddam etc, but what I don't get is the the 2 dollar prostitute act that America portrays with Saudi Arabia in spite of the former having such a disgraceful human rights record, yet willing to condemn other countries.

uggh, gross. There isn't a coming showdown, by the way, we are just continuing the conflict that's happened for 1000 years. Islam and Europe, (now the west) have pretty much always had conflict to one degree or another. This isn't anything new. Actually I think you could make a good argument that there is far less conflict now then in the past. In fact the 'showdown' that you speak of is ratcheting down, rather then up. Remember that in the past Muslims have full out invaded Europe through Turkey into the Balkins and also through Morroco and into Spain. Crusaders equally invaded Islamic lands and occupied them. Historians in the far future will probably look at it as a continuation of past conflict in previous centuries rather then something new, which we only view it that way because of the brevity of our lives and lack of historical context.

As for the child being one less combatant, we can never know now. He might have been the next Gandhi who brought peace to the middle east or the next Osama Bin Laden. That life was stolen and we can't know. What we do know is that is that we have a history of arming our future enemies. I think the men who killed that child are far more likely to be our next enemy then the child himself.

Kill 'em all and let a politically-useful figment of the imagination sort 'em out. Invoking Diderot. "Man will never be free until the last king is strangled with the entrails of the last priest." Any other course and our species deserves extinction.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'
