Poll of over 3000 U.S. troops: Gary Johnson preffered over Clinton, Trump

Poll of over 3000 U.S. troops: Gary Johnson preffered over Clinton, Trump
Gary is anti-war, so it's great that he got 38.7% (with little to no press coverage bear in mind). Donald received 30.9% in the poll, and Hilary came in a distant last place, getting just 14.1%. So the troops really don't like Hilary in other words. She got less than half the percentage that Gary and Donald got. (Perhaps they think she is the most pro-war of the three?) Shame Jill Stein wasn't included. I'll let Kyle of Secular Talk elaborate on the poll:

As a former member of the military, I am positive that poll is not representative. It was conducted by an online personality. I can pretty much guarantee you that 38.7% of service members don't even know who Gary Johnson is, much less would vote for a libertarian.

Quote:Although the survey was not a scientific poll with a margin of error, it provides a snapshot of the preferences of about 3,500 active duty, reservists, retired and former members of the military and their family members, 95.7 percent of which were registered voters.

Intimately knowing the two largest branches of the military (Army and Navy/Marine Corps), I know they recruit the type of people who would love Donald Trump. I have lived on or worked on 7 Navy/Marine Corps Bases and one Army base in the last 5 years. Solid Red. Big trucks, NRA members, and military spending. No way this is an accurate poll.

I wish it were true, but I cannot get there with the military I know.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

I'm surprised that Trump only got 30.9%.

Thanks for the insights. I already suspected the military was more Republican leaning. If Gary got that much percentage in the presidential election it would be great.

I heard somewhere that Texas sends more people to the military than any other state. Seeing as Texans voted for Cruz over Trump in the primaries it would suggest they are very conservative. I honestly expected Clinton to do better. But the poll apparently wasn't scientific, as Kyle stated. Gary Johnson is as high as 13% in some national polls though, and his numbers so no sign of decreasing. So I expect him to get millions more votes than last time.

Wouldn't have surprised me when I was in.  Libertarianism was making a big push for our demographic, at the time. Mostly as cover for neocon platforms. OTOH, plenty of poor blacks and non-stereotypical whites (wiccans, gays, one buddhist...go figure)...so that probably evened it out with dem voters. If it fell Lib/Rep/Dem..in that order...I'd have shrugged and said "figures".
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I guess it depends which part of the United States you're from. If you live in Hawaii, the Republicans only have one seat in the upper house I believe, so it's heavily Democrat. Conversely, I've heard Wyoming described as the most Republican state. If the military does prefer Libertarian idea, and intimacy less wars, than that's great for all of us.

Not a scientific poll, so it doesn't mean anything. Libertarians are vastly over represented online, so when they do well it online polls, it's pretty much meaningless to real life. Which is pretty fitting, because many of their ideas don't work well in real life either.

That being said, if I recall correctly Ron Paul did extremely well with military members maybe even winning majority support despite losing badly with everyone else. I think it more has to do with the age group then anything else. Young Republicans don't care about social issues and are more likely to be libertarians or libertarian leaning.

Also despite the fact I disagree with him on much, I'm voting for Gary Johnson because "Feel the Johnson" is an awesome campaign slogan, because he's anti-war, a rock climber and owns a marijuana business.
