Another "how could any intelligent woman be a Christian?" thread
This has been discussed many times before, but a Catholic friend brought up the subject of female clergy again last night - and I was ornery enough to quote a few Bible verses back to her.  I will probably have to buy her a bottle of wine this afternoon and go over to apologize.  (ha!)   She was more than a little flustered by the verses, and went back to "well, the Bible is just a guide - it's not literal - things were very different back then".  (We agreed on that point.)

But in my nerdy fashion, I created a collection of verses when I got home.  I thought that I would share my musings.  I will hide most of these verses, so you won't be assaulted by a wall of text.   But the one verse I REALLY hate is in 1st Timothy.  It actually says that a woman is "saved through childbirth".  My friend and I are both single and will never have children.  She's a devout Catholic, so she's not a fan of Timothy either.

=======
The Old Testament is riddled with verses that declare women to have less value than the average goat.  She was made for the use of males, anyway they wanted, and that's mostly because the serpent tricked her into eating an apple in the Garden of Eden.  All evil was the fault of women.  (Of course, we now know that the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve never existed, so there was no "original sin" and no "fall of man".)
Genesis 3:16
To the woman He said, "I will greatly multiply Your pain in childbirth, In pain you will bring forth children; Yet your desire will be for your husband, And he will rule over you."
People will tell you that things are different now, and the Christian Bible is really the NEW Testament, after Jesus.  But the New Testament is also full of misogyny and is the source for much of the subjugation of women in the last 2000 years.

1 Timothy 2:8 -
8 Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands, without anger or dissension. 9 Likewise, I want the women to adorn themselves with respectable apparel, with modesty, and with self-control, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, 10 but with good deeds, as is proper for women who profess to worship God. 11 A woman must learn in quietness and full submissiveness. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man; she is to remain quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, and then Eve. 14 And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman who was deceived and fell into transgression. 15 Women, however, will be saved through childbearing, if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control.

People dismiss the god of the Old Testament, even though Jesus said clearly that Yahweh and the law were unchanging.  So if this is the same god, why couldn't he have told them that women were equal and not animals to be raped and abused and murdered? He could convince men to cut off part of their penises, but you don’t think that he could have convinced them women were worthy of respect?

Women will be saved by obeying their husband, being a silent housekeeper and a sex slave and a breeder.  Go be silent and have babies, that’s how women can redeem themselves. (1 Timothy 2:9-15)
Gospel Apologists jump through the usual hoops and tie their gray matter into pretzels trying to put the proper spin on this blatant misogyny.  One of the most common responses one finds is "Rather than abandoning their intended roles by demanding teaching and authoritative positions in the church, women will find true fulfillment through childbearing."  These responses were clearly written by preachers who were wanking off to a Playboy centerfold whilst telling the image that "god made you for me me me me and I can do anything I want to you thank you god".
Seriously, how can any female be a xtian or a muslim?  It's incomprehensible.  Stockholm Syndrome?

Well with Islam it's obvious, you will either face physical prosecution or all family support if you deconvert. (Before someone scream, 'not all Muslims' at me, yes not all Muslims just most of them.) With Christians it's most indoctrination. You are one because you always were one.

Because they'll get ostracized or killed if they don't submit. It's not just about smarts. It's about brainwashing, and cultural pressure.

Because there is no freedom of thought. I know this. It took me two years of not going to church and not living with family, to read the Bible for the third time, this time free to actually delve. When that happened, it was like I was reading everything in it for the first time, and I was grossed out. You see, I was brainwashed. That's difficult to undo. I'm one of the fortunate ones. I truly believe I'm a survivor.

That's my story as well.  I was brainwashed, and afraid to question.  My Mother actually "wore the pants" in our family, but played the sweet obedient loving wife part to the hilt in public.  She would even brag to friends that when election time came around, "my husband tells me who to vote for".  Even as a proper church-going teen, that one made me gag.  Only when I realized that I couldn't believe, did these Bible passages start to sound as . . . repulsive as they are.

An intelligent woman can be a Christian, as she reads the whole of scripture, rather than just cherry-picking as has been done here. Women can't have authority over a man in the church. That's not much of a restriction.

Read Proverbs 31, starting at verse 10, and particularly verse 16: "She considers a field and buys it; From her profits she plants a vineyard." So, Biblically, a wife has control of money, owns real estate, and operates businesses. Reading the passage, the real question is what doesn't a woman do? Oh yeah, she can't be pastor of a church - something very few people want to be anyway.

You would not agree with the bolded line if the situation was reversed.  "Men have to stay silent in the church.  They can hold no authority."
There are a lot of women who want to be pastors and deacons, and I know many who are absolutely excellent pastors.

If there's a lot of women who want to be pastors and deacons, you're admitting that a lot of women find Christianity attractive. And if you know many who are excellent pastors...what's the problem? Tell the ones who want to be pastors and deacons about the denominations with the female pastors.

The letter of the day is I for indoctrination.
Indoctrination is a way to brainwash people into believe religion which is
horse shit because it's true. For a woman to want to be a christian yeah it bothers me too
it bothers me that why would any woman or any black person, irish etc too would want to be a christian.
That religion has been used for terrible things and to call it good is such a laugh in the face of our values.
Granted everyone has a right to worship what ever the fuck they want and follow what ever religion
but yeah.. why would they want to be christians since that book is as bad as the koran and the OT.

By your own book women are just objects they are not treated as human beings but merely objects to do the will of the man.
Even so by your own bible and god a woman is not permitted to hold any power over a man and is not allowed to be a priest or even a pastor at that.
Not me saying this but yeah your own book.
