They do that now (although not enough) because people write and talk about clergy raping kids and put pressure on them. Before, the clergy was untouchable, and it still is untouchable in too many parts of the world because people are afraid to talk about it.

Yes, predators are everywhere.  However, people who claim to be following a superior divinely-mandated moral code need to adhere to a higher standard -- to walk the walk.  (Either that, or we need to just laugh uproariously as we shoo them off the moral high ground that they've usurped.)

Religious people who do that stuff, should be imprisoned for life, because clearly they don't fear God's judgment, or at least not enough to abstain from the immoral behavior, so locking them up and throwing away the key, would be an appropriate thing to do.

I disagree. Laws and punishments should never, ever be based on religion. The law needs to be neutral, with neither favours nor extra punishments given to people because of what they believe or don't believe. If the sentence for sexual abuse of a minor is 20 years, then 20 years it should be, even for believers who have violated a tenet of their beliefs. If your god wants to hand out additional punishment, that's a separate issue.

He claimed to be Catholic but his healing abilities were open to people of different faiths and religions.

As heard in the Netflix documentary, John of God: The Crimes of a Spiritual Healer, Faria is known in Brazil as a Saint.

His powers were seen as incredible, he received extensive media coverage on CNN, ABC News, and The Oprah Winfrey Show.

An extensive investigation by James Randi and Joe Nickell for ABC News exposed Faria's "healing procedures" as being nothing more than tricks. They also argued the miracles experienced by his followers were simply placebo effects.

As heard in the John of God: The Crimes of a Spiritual Healer, the Prosecution Office of the State of Goiás set up an email address and hotline for other women to come forward.

Within less than 48 hours, over 200 complaints were received across nine different states in Brazil. Two other claims came from the United States and Switzerland, reported Gobo TV.

His own daughter, Dalva Faria came forward as one of the victims. In an interview with Brazilian magazine Veja, she stated her father raped and beat her, calling him a "monster."

In December 2019, he was sentenced to 19 years and four months, for the rapes of four different women, reported ABC News.

Problem is that religious institutions (and I include the scouts in this because they are strongly affiliated with various christian churches) have a uniquely awful habit of covering up their abusers, protecting them and ultimately putting them into positions where they can keep abusing over, and over, and over, and over again.

Lawsuits identify 230 priests as molesters, including 8 of WNY's most-accused abusers

Child Victims Act lawsuits filed in Western New York alleged that 230 area Catholic priests molested children in nearly every parish in the Buffalo Diocese over the past 75 years, according to an analysis by The Buffalo News.

Eight of the 10 most-accused individuals identified in more than 1,300 lawsuits examined by The News are priests.

The numbers are a striking rebuke to Buffalo Diocese officials who for decades downplayed the extent of abuse in Western New York and protected molester priests from prosecution and public accountability.

“It really speaks to the culture of the diocese and the culture of the local priesthood. I have always maintained that there are good priests out there, but I tend to think almost everybody knew what was going on at some level,” said attorney Steve Boyd

Cologne cardinal stays, despite sex abuse cover-up scandal

The pope has said Cardinal Rainer Maria Woelki should remain as Cologne’s archbishop, but accused him of big mistakes. The senior cleric was accused of protecting priests suspected of sexual abuse.

The second document, released in March this year, showed 314 people — mainly boys under the age of 14 — were abused by clergy in the Cologne diocese between 1975 and 2018.

Woelki himself was cleared of wrongdoing by the report and has repeatedly rejected calls for his resignation.

High-ranking members of the organization were accused of failing to follow up on or report cases of abuse, not sanctioning perpetrators, or not caring for victims.

Earlier this month, Pope Francis rejected the resignation of Hamburg's archbishop Stefan Hesse. Hesse had offered to step down in March after he was accused of mishandling sexual abuse allegations in the second report commissioned by Woelki.

Hesse in particular was faulted for 11 cases of neglecting his duty. He conceded that he had made "mistakes'' in the past, but denied actively aiding efforts to shield abusers.
