‘Everyone was groomed’: Anne Manne’s story of Newcastle’s paedophile priest network centres on a ‘kidnapped’ childhood
In 2017, the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse found that within the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle, priests had perpetuated crimes of abuse for at least 30 years. Serious allegations were mismanaged, misplaced or ignored. Crimes were minimised. “Abusive and predatory” behaviour was wrongly portrayed as “consensual”.
In her new book, Crimes of the Cross, journalist Anne Manne provides an intricate and compelling account of how multiple diocesan clergy and leaders covered up allegations, protected priests who were known perpetrators and failed to care for survivors.
At least six priests associated with the diocese and one lay reader have been convicted of child sex offending. Other priests were identified as “prolific” abusers, but not convicted in their lifetime.
Manne clearly shows the abuse perpetrated by priests was not isolated, nor random events committed by one “bad” man (or even a few bad men). Rather, there was a network of abusers and enablers, as well as systemic failures that allowed the church to become a “cover” for criminal activity. At the centre of the story, Manne states, there is “the denial of what ‘ostensibly good men’ do”.

Outrage as traditional Ghanaian priest, 63, marries 12-year-old girl
The priest, Nuumo Borketey Laweh Tsuru XXXIII, married her in a customary ceremony held on Saturday.
In the face of criticism, community leaders have said people do not understand their customs and tradition.
The legal minimum age to get married in Ghana is 18 and the prevalence of child marriage has declined, but it continues to happen.
During the ceremony, women speaking in the local language Ga told the girl to dress teasingly for her husband.
They can also be heard advising her to be prepared for wifely duties and to use the perfumes they gifted her to boost her sexual appeal to her husband.
Leaders of the Nungua indigenous community, to which both the girl and the priest belong, have condemned the public's opposition to the marriage, saying the criticism "comes from a point of ignorance".

Vatican investigates disturbing reports as Peruvian archbishop resigns from position
Archbishop José Eguren of Piura, Peru resigned amid a Vatican investigation into sexual abuse and financial corruption within the Sodalitium Christianae Vitae movement. The Vatican has been watching the group for over a decade, and in 2017 a report revealed founder Luis Fernando Figari’s sexual abuses. Journalists Pedro Salinas and Paola Ugaz first exposed these abuses in 2015, along with reports of forced evictions in Eguren’s diocese by a Sodalitium-linked developer. Eguren filed a defamation lawsuit against the journalists in 2018 but dropped it in 2019 after facing criticism. Last year, the Vatican sent investigators to Peru to look into the allegations within Sodalitium, which led to Eguren’s resignation.
The Vatican’s investigation has not released its findings, but there is speculation that Eguren’s resignation is a prelude to further actions, potentially the suppression of Sodalitium.
Complaints about Figari’s behavior were made to the Lima archdiocese in 2011, but action wasn’t taken until the release of Salinas’ book in 2015.

Sacramento Diocese Files For Bankruptcy Amid Lawsuits
The Diocese of Sacramento announced that they had officially filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. It comes months after the diocese announced its intentions to file for bankruptcy in the wake of more than 250 lawsuits claiming sexual abuse by clergy and other staff.
In a statement, Bishop of Sacramento Jaime Soto said the filing was the “best” way the diocese could compensate victims.
“There are many victim-survivors who have long suffered from the reprehensible sins committed against them,” Bishop Soto said. “This reorganization process will allow me to respond to them as equitably as possible.”
