New Orleans priest accused of abusing children in deaf community dies from apparent fall aged 87

A New Orleans Catholic priest whose prolific sexual abuse of children in the local deaf community was known for at least four decades by the city’s archdiocese without meaningful consequence has died after evidently falling in his Texas apartment.

Gerard Joseph “Jerry” Howell, 87, was found dead at about 5pm on 8 September by Austin police department officers who were responding to a welfare check on the block listed for the senior living community where he had been residing, the agency said in a statement. The statement – which didn’t name Howell but was provided when police were asked about his death specifically – said first responders had gone to the block to investigate a report that an 87-year-old individual had fallen.

New Orleans’ Roman Catholic archdiocese provided support to Howell for 40 years after becoming aware of his serial child molestation. They kept him on as an active priest even after reporting him to law enforcement in 1980 and his being publicly exposed by WWL Louisiana in 1992, and then paying him his retirement benefits until at least 2020.

A church spokesperson said the archdiocese learned of Howell’s death later that same week. And an archdiocese-managed webpage of dozens of priests and deacons who were removed from ministry for abuse of a minor was then quietly updated to list him as deceased.

One of Howell’s most outspoken survivors, Kathleen Austin, said on Tuesday that it was a relief for her to learn of his death.

Howell’s death is significant because his case was in the public eye for decades while he continued to avoid punishment for abuse he inflicted while ministering to people with impaired hearing.

WWL, a Guardian reporting partner, was rolling cameras when Austin confronted him at his home in Texas all the way back in 1992. The news station reported that the archdiocese of New Orleans was aware of many of Howell’s alleged child-abuse victims by then and refused to remove him from active ministry.

About 740 clergy molestation claimants are divvying up a $305m settlement that the archdiocese agreed to pay to resolve its bankruptcy protection case, with individuals’ compensation amounts based on a complicated rubric meant to assess various factors such as the nature and duration of the abuse involved.

Many of those claimants name abusers whom the archdiocese has not included in its list of clergy removed from ministry for abuse of a minor.

'It should be exposed': Survivor calls on church to release treatment records of abusive priests

A man who was abused by a notorious Catholic priest in Newfoundland is joining other voices calling on the church to release its records on abusive priests sent away for treatment.

The man can only be identified as John Doe. He was abused by Father George Ansel Smith as a young boy on the west coast of Newfoundland in the 1970s.

Court records show Smith was sent to the Southdown Institute — an Ontario therapy centre offering a range of services for priests dealing with issues ranging from depression and alcoholism to pedophilia — in 1992.

He returned to the priesthood for nearly 20 years, until John Doe and a dozen other men came forward with allegations starting in 2011.

"I think it should be exposed for everybody to see the truth,” John Doe told CBC News. “There are file cabinets and rooms full of this stuff in every parish and every diocese. It needs to just be exposed for what it is, and let people start living their lives and move on."

In the wake of the story, prominent clergy abuse advocate and survivor Gemma Hickey called on the church to turn over its records for independent examination, so the public could know once and for all which priests were sent away for treatment, what Southdown recommended, and whether or not the church adhered to those recommendations.

John Doe agrees.

“I’m not surprised," he said. "I mean there’s probably more of this stuff kicking around. How many people’s lives have to be ruined before somebody says we were wrong and we’re going to atone for that now?”

Smith was sentenced to 11 years in prison in 2013. He served a fraction of that time before being released on parole.

John Doe sued the Diocese of Corner Brook and Labrador (formerly known as the Diocese of St. George's) nearly 13 years ago, alleging it knew or ought to have known that Smith was a risk to children and its negligence resulted in him being abused.

He watched with mixed feelings as the Archdiocese of St. John's was forced to sell off properties to settle abuse cases on the east coast, while the church continued fighting him on the other side of the island.

Panama Catholic Church reports dozens of clerical abuse cases

The Catholic Church in Panama has recorded dozens of complaints alleging sexual abuse of minors and other vulnerable people by priests, according to a report released Tuesday.

Prepared by two Catholic universities at the request of the church, the report found 37 complaints for sexual abuse were filed against clergy members between 2001 and 2025.

The Archbishop of Panama City, Jose Domingo Ulloa, said in a presentation of the report that it sought to determine how the church had managed “this entire reality of sexual abuse against minors.”

The Panama report found no evidence of a deliberate policy of concealment of abuse by the church in the Central American country, but did flag problems in how the complaints were handled.

Louisville priest resigns amid sexual assault lawsuit against Catholic church

Gladis Garcia, who worked for Our Lady of Lourdes, claims in a lawsuit that she was raped and sexually harassed by her supervisor.

Her attorney, John Spalding, said when Garcia tried to report the abuse to the priest, he dismissed her claims and her employment was threatened.

“She went to the priest at Our Lady of Lourdes, Father David Sanchez, and reported it. And we allege that he didn't do anything about it, that he did not believe her, that, in fact, he told her not to talk about it. Then he tried to silence her,” Spalding said.

In light of the lawsuit, Fr. David Sanchez has resigned, according to the parish.

New website tracks accused Protestant clergy sexual abusers

A team of clergy sexual abuse survivors and their supporters announced the launch of a new website to help track predators and the churches that cover up for them.

ProtestantAccountability.org already boasts a list of more than 2,700 accused perpetrators ranging from clergy and lay staff members to teachers and camp counselors from across 100 denominations, organizers said during an Aug. 19 virtual press conference.

“This is an effort to spread awareness, inform the public, protect potential victims and help heal those who’ve already been wounded,” said Protestant Accountability President Chellee Taylor, who won a settlement in 2022 from Journey Church, a Southern Baptist Convention church in Orlando where she was sexually abused as an adult by a satellite campus pastor.

“This database has the potential to save others from the suffering I endured not just at the hands of my pastor, but by the institution who chose to protect him over honoring God with accountability, transparency and truth,” Taylor said.

Protestant Accountability is not a content creator, she added. “We collect already public information and put it all in one place for easy searchability. The people posted on the site have been accused of committing or mishandling cases of sexual abuse while holding some sort of spiritual authority. We do not claim the guilt of any person, only provide the information so others can form their own opinions.”

The new site is the latest in a series of online databases designed to keep tabs on, and provide warnings about, clergy and church sexual abuse, including StopBaptistPredators.org, BishopAccountability.org and the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, or SNAP.

The website will be a vital tool for church parents and staff, police and prosecutors trying to learn more about accused, suspended or convicted clergy and other religious workers, he said.

Abuse survivors ask US Supreme Court to hear clergy secrecy case

Does freedom of religion give churches a pass to shield acts of crime? And are the courts allowing it?

Arizona’s Family investigates a “Hail Mary” plea for the U.S. Supreme Court to give three survivors of child rape, who say they were failed by their family, their church and the courts, a sliver of hope to have faith in the system.

Lynne Cadigan and John Trebone have been working pro bono for years on behalf of three child sex abuse survivors who say bishops with Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- Day Saints knew they were being abused in conversations outside the confessional and failed to take action as required by state law to protect them from years of abuse and torture.

“The victims in this case would have been willing to settle this matter if the church promised to change their policy, which they refused. Absolutely refused,” Cadigan said.

“I was told from the very beginning, from the attorneys representing the church, ‘You will never win this case. We know who’s on the Supreme Court, and they will never let a church be held accountable,’” Cadigan said.

Arizona law requires priests and members of the clergy to immediately report child sex abuse just like counselors & physicians who also have privileged communication. The only exemption is for a confession or confidential communication deemed “reasonable and necessary” by church doctrine to withhold.

This case hinges on confidentiality and allegations of a cover-up. That confidentiality was waived after Paul Adams’ initial confession to the bishop, and that LDS Church protocol of sending all abuse hotline calls to a legal team and destroying evidence is designed to silence victims and shield the institution.

A 2022 investigation by the Associated Press uncovered how the LDS Church set up an abuse hotline that wasn’t for victims, but church leaders, diverting calls to lawyers in Salt Lake City and destroying records at the end of each day.

In this case, the bishop was also the family doctor and helped counsel the couple, again, both those roles outside the church, require mandatory reporting even for otherwise privileged information disclosed in those sessions. The Arizona statue also stipulates the clergy exemption does not apply to any personal observations made of the children.

“This victim cannot understand why her family doctor, who was her bishop, sat next to her for seven years, knowing this was going on [her father was raping her], and did nothing,” Cadigan said.

The Arizona Supreme Court’s unanimous July 30 ruling sided with the church.

“It’s no longer an exemption. It’s immunity,” Trebone said.

“Churches here now have a free pass to call anything confidential. They could have a confession in a stadium, and under this ruling, they could say under their doctrine, it’s confidential,” Cadigan said.

“How about Warren Jeffs? How about how about all these crazy religions? They can all come here, abuse kids all day long, and they can conceal it and claim they learned about it in a confidential manner,” Cadigan said.

Child sex abuse survivor, life coach and author Jennifer Nielson said it’s past time to eliminate the clergy exemption.

“They’re fighting it to protect themselves. The institution over the child. The abuser over the child,” Nielson said.

She’s still recovering from decades of suppressed trauma.

“I was an adult that didn’t speak up after a church leader told me not to,” she said. She says her abuse started when she was 3 and lasted at least five years.

“I don’t know what the adults saw or didn’t see growing up, I just know that there were many victims of my uncle. And my particular memories came out in my mid-30s,” Nielson said.

Report details findings of investigation of child sexual abuse in 3 Catholic Dioceses in Massachusetts

The Massachusetts Attorney General's investigation covered the Dioceses of Worcester, Springfield and Fall River. It does not include the Archdiocese of Boston, which was the subject of a 91-page report issued by the office in 2003.

Work on the new report began in 2019, under then-Attorney General Maura Healey, who is now governor. Attorney General Andrea Campbell's office released the findings.

According to a summary issued by Campbell's office, findings include that "more than 270 Catholic clerics abused nearly 1,000 children across the three dioceses."

"This report provides for the first time a public accounting of the unimaginable harms (inflicted) on children in the Fall River, Springfield, and Worcester dioceses," Campbell said in a statement. "While important reforms have been made, the report documents decades of failures by diocesan leaders to adequately respond to allegations of child sexual abuse and protect children from further harm."

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Worcester issued its own report in 2023 about clergy sexual abuse of minors between 1950 and 2022. It did not include names, but found 209 allegations of priest sexual abuse over the 72-year period. Of those, 173 were found to be credible, 28 were unsubstantiated and eight were false or withdrawn.

Wednesday's new report notes that Worcester continues to be the only diocese in Massachusetts that does not maintain a publicly accessible list of credibly accused clergy.

Georgia pastor who pleaded guilty to cruelty to children returns to the pulpit

A Georgia pastor who pleaded guilty to cruelty to children was preaching again last week, telling a congregation about the importance of “childlike” faith.

Russell Jon Tusing II was accused of domestic violence, sexual assault, and cruelty to a 13-year-old child, garnering media attention in 2024. His ex-wife, Sarah Tusing, and their children said they feared for their lives.

“I and my immediate … family are absolutely terrified at what he is and what he is capable of doing when he is free in the public,” one of Tusing’s adult sons said in a court hearing.

He preached about the importance of knowing God as a father and having a childlike faith. He told some stories about his four kids, mentioning that his two daughters would run to hug him after church every Sunday.

Tusing’s ex-wife told the court in December that Tusing gains people’s trust as a pastor. But behind closed doors, he was different. She said he was abusive and often violent. According to Sarah Tusing, the pastor kept a loaded gun at home and in his church office.

“Husband, father, pastor. Those titles should be comforting, held in high regard, trusted, and respected,” Sarah Tusing told the court. “Not in the case of Russell. He violated each of those roles in the worst way. The truth is Russell is an abuser, deceitful, angry, violent, a drunk, and an oppressive man.”

Tusing was also accused of sexual abuse. In a statement given at the plea hearing, Tusing was accused of touching a 13-year-old girl when drunk.

In 2022, he “touched her inappropriately on her upper thigh on several occasions,” according to county prosecutor Monique Kirby. “And on one particular day, she felt like it was a little close to an area where he shouldn’t be touching her at all.”

RR does not disclose the names of alleged victims unless they have chosen to publicly come forward.

In May 2024, another woman came forward after seeing news about Tusing’s arrest. According to the assistant district attorney, she told police that Tusing sat next to her in a bar in Florida and “ran his hand up the thigh.”

She told the Orange County Sheriff’s Office that she pushed the man’s hand away but then he touched her a second time. She said he slid his hand all the way up her leg, touching the outside of her underwear, only pulling away when she yelled at him.

A bartender confirmed the substance of the woman’s account, according to the sheriff’s office. He gave deputies a copy of the man’s credit card, which had Tusing’s name and the name of the church on it.

Tusing’s wife and three of his four children all spoke to the court in December, before the judge decided on a sentence in the plea deal. They described a life of fear.

The family recounted calling police multiple times, hiding Tusing’s guns and cowering behind closed doors as the pastor allegedly made violent threats. Sarah Tusing said the family was forced to make contingency plans to escape her ex-husband’s outbursts.

“I never want to see him again,” one of Tusing’s daughters said at the plea hearing. “I just want me and my family to be safe.”

Abuse survivors may get a day in court as new bill could resurrect clergy sex abuse claims in Ohio

In the wake of the Catholic Church abuse scandal in 2002, roughly 400 people in Southwest Ohio came forward to report being sexually molested by priests during their childhood.

Almost 200 of them filed lawsuits, mostly in Hamilton County, but judges dismissed them one by one, without anyone coming to the courthouse or any evidence being presented, because according to state law, they were simply too old to proceed.

But their resurrection may be coming.

Ohio Sen. Bill Blessing announced last week that he will sponsor legislation to remove the criminal and civil statute of limitations in childhood sexual abuse cases and open a lookback window for victims to revive cases from decades ago.

“I’ve seen really small monetary settlements have a tremendous healing effect,” said attorney Konrad Kircher, who filed 25 lawsuits on behalf of clergy abuse victims between 2002 and 2005, at the height of the scandal.

When asked if these survivors, who never got a day in court, would want to revive their old cases if the law were changed in Ohio, Kircher firmly responded, “Yes.”

Nearly 40 Catholic dioceses have sought bankruptcy protection from the costs of lawsuits and settlements triggered by states passing similar revival windows for abuse survivors.

“And not a single one of them is out of business; it’s just a way to marshal their assets and insurance claims. They have insurance,” Kircher said.

Blessing predicted that his bill would encounter strong resistance from the Catholic Church, because historically their lobby has been powerful and well-funded.

11 clergy, church workers named in Worcester Diocese abuse report

The Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office identified 11 clergy members and church workers linked to abuse cases in the Worcester Diocese in a report released Wednesday, even as the diocese refuses to publish a comprehensive list of the accused clergy.

The report stated that there were at least 90 accused clergy connected to the Worcester Diocese and 216 documented survivors.

Unlike other dioceses, including Springfield and Fall River, the Worcester Diocese does not have a public list of accused clergy members.

Of the 11 individuals, 10 were ordained as priests and one, Raymond Tremblay, was a religious educator.

In 1993, priest Ronald Provost was given a 10-year suspended state prison sentence for taking nude photographs of a partially undressed 10-year-old boy, according to Worcester Magazine.

The former pastor of St. Joseph’s Church in Barre, Provost had told police in an affidavit that he had “taken pictures of kids in the nude, mooning,” according to a New Yorker article written in 1993.

Provost was a popular priest in the diocese who used federal grant money to run a street hockey league for children, according to the Attorney General’s report.

In the 1960s, Thomas Teczar was fired from his summer job at the Nazareth Home for Boys in Leicester, after several accusations of sexually inappropriate conduct with boys were made against him, according to the attorney general’s report. Nevertheless, he was ordained. In the 1970s, he was accused of abusing multiple boys at St. Mary’s in Uxbridge.

Teczar was not removed from parishes in Worcester until 1984, when the parents of a 15-year-old victim demanded that Bishop Harrington remove him from ministry, the report reads.

Even after being removed from the Worcester diocese, he later served as a visiting priest in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fort Worth from 1988 to 1993, according to the Herman Law firm.

Catholic Priest pleads guilty to 109 sex offences

A priest has pleaded guilty to 109 sex offences at Londonderry Crown Court.

Edward Gallagher, 59, whose address is Maghaberry Prison, will be sentenced in December.

The charges relate to dates between 22 June 2023 and 18 April 2025.

They include among others attempted sexual communication with a child under 16, possessing indecent images of a child, possessing an extreme pornographic image and attempting to encourage a child to engage in sexual activity.

When the charges were put to him Gallagher pleaded guilty to them all.

The judge adjourned the case for sentencing on 9 December.

Gallagher remains in custody.

Former Kentucky pastor, Sunrise Children's worker charged with child sexual sexual abuse

A former pastor of two Kentucky churches and former Sunrise Children's Services employee is facing multiple charges in connection to the sexual abuse of a minor.

According to court documents, Scott Hughes, 54, has been charged with second and third-degree sodomy, first-degree sexual abuse, and incest of a person under the age of 18 by someone three years or more older.

Pulaski County Sheriff's deputies say they charges stem from a 2018 incident involving alleged sexual contact with victims who were minors at the time.

Enumclaw church sued after youth pastor allegedly discussed sexual topics with a minor

An Auburn family is suing Mount Rainier Christian Church in civil court after a youth pastor allegedly sent inappropriate messages to their daughter in the youth program, including texts that alluded to sexual behavior.

The suit was filed in the King County Superior Court in March, and the plaintiff is expected to be deposed Oct. 12.

The lawsuit claims former Youth Pastor Tyler Cash and the plaintiff exchanged over 10,000 text messages between 2023 to 2025. It further claims Cash alluded to sexual topics with the plaintiff during their text message communications and discussed these topics with her in more detail during in-person meetings. The contact between Cash and the plaintiff also included phone calls, in-person conversations at the church and church events, as well as unsupervised one-on-one meetings off the church’s premises.

Former Australian Catholic bishop sentenced for abusing Indigenous men

A former Australian Catholic bishop was sentenced Wednesday to six years and six months in prison for sexually abusing two young Indigenous men.

A District Court of Western Australia state jury convicted Christopher Saunders, 76, in August of 13 out of 19 charges of sexual abuse that occurred between 2008 and 2019 in his sprawling Broome Diocese on the country’s tropical northwest coast.

Saunders will become eligible for parole in February 2031.

Saunders is one of the most senior Australian Catholics to be convicted in a global clergy abuse scandal that has faced the Vatican for years.

Cardinal George Pell was convicted of abusing choirboys, and Archbishop Philip Wilson was convicted of covering up child sex abuse by a priest. But both clerics successfully appealed their convictions.

Prosecutors alleged Saunders lured young Indigenous men to his church-owned house with alcohol and cigarettes paid for with church funds.

The Vatican began investigating Saunders in 2022, then handed the Western Australia Police Force a report on its findings the following year. Police charged Saunders in 2024.

While the report was never officially made public, the findings were leaked to Australia’s Seven Network television news, which reported Saunders likely sexually assaulted four Indigenous youths and potentially groomed another 67 Indigenous youths and men.

Former St. Agnes student testifies priest threatened family with hell during alleged abuse

Taking the stand Tuesday, a former St. Agnes Catholic School student, now in his 40s, detailed for a Baltimore County jury how a former priest singled him out and sexually abused him as a child.

The man, who says he went decades without telling anyone about the abuse, testified that while he was in elementary school, William “Father Bill” Mannion Jr. told him that God came to him in a dream and said that if the boy didn’t do what he was told, his brother and family would “burn for eternity in hell.”

After the roughly dozen incidents of abuse, the man said, Mannion would tell him to say a prayer.

“As strange as it sounds,” the man testified about the abuse Tuesday, “I was excited because I thought I was saving my family.”

Mannion, 64, of Sparrows Point, is charged with child abuse and 14 second-degree sex offenses. Investigators say the abuse began after Mannion arrived at St. Agnes in 1994, when the boy was 10.

The former student said that after class was over, Mannion would walk him to his bedroom in the rectory, where Mannion would talk to him about his behavior and the questions he answered incorrectly.

The man testified that he and Mannion would then talk about the boy’s life and the things he was interested in, like sharks.
It was during those conversations that the abuse would begin, the man said. He testified that the first time it happened, Mannion directed him to perform oral sex in order to save his family from burning in hell for eternity.

This continued about a dozen times, the man said, adding that the abuse eventually turned into intercourse in the shower. He testified that Mannion would say they were washing away their sins.

After these interactions, the man testified, they would get dressed and Mannion would walk him back to class. He said Mannion’s demeanor was “lively” during the abuse but became “agitated” and “angry” afterward.

In one instance, the man said, Mannion abused him in the showers on a camping trip for Boy Scouts. He said the abuse ended when his family moved to Pennsylvania for his father’s job.

The man said he didn’t tell anyone about the abuse at the time because he didn’t want his little brother to go to hell.

Southern Baptist pastor in Kentucky arrested on sodomy, sexual abuse charges

Scott Christian Hughes, 54, pastor of a Southern Baptist church in Kentucky, was arrested Thursday night on four charges, including sodomy, sexual abuse and incest, according to the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office.

Hughes, who led Pleasant View Baptist Church in Waynesburg, about 60 miles south of Lexington, faces a maximum possible sentence of 40 years in prison for “deviate sexual intercourse” with a child under 14.

He may also face additional charges in another jurisdiction, according to the sheriff’s office. Two people have come forward with allegations. One told Pulaski County deputies about abuse that allegedly started in 2018. Another reported allegations of abuse between 2012 and 2013.

Sheriff Bobby Jones said there may be other victims as well.

Popular TikTok missionary, Maylon Foshee, accused of sexually abusing teenage boys in Haiti

Maylon Foshee, 23, an international Creole-speaking missionary and popular TikTok content creator with more than 100,000 followers, has been charged with sexually abusing three teenage boys in Haiti while doing ministry in the troubled Caribbean nation.

A complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana on Sept. 22 said Foshee has been charged with engaging in illicit sexual conduct with minors in a foreign country. He also faces up to 30 years in federal prison if convicted, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Louisiana.

Foshee, who's from Mansfield, Louisiana, gained internet fame for being a blond-haired American fluent in Haitian Kreyòl, worked with Agape Ministries in Gonaives, Haiti.

Investigators with the FBI said they were notified in March that Foshee had allegedly sexually abused minors while he was doing missionary work in the Caribbean country from 2023 to 2025.

Upon investigating, authorities determined that Foshee had sexually abused three boys, all aged 14 at the time, between February and December 2025. The boys were identified as Minor Victim 1 and Minor Victim 2, both of whom live in Gonaives, and Minor Victim 3, who now lives in Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic.

Former students allege decades of abuse at former Bronzeville Catholic school in new lawsuit

Seven former students of the former Holy Angels Catholic School in Bronzeville filed lawsuits alleging they were sexually abused by priests and accused the Archdiocese of Chicago of failing to protect students despite knowing about the allegations.

Attorneys representing the former students said more than 100 former students were abused at the Catholic school and that some alleged victims were as young as 5 years old.

The seven lawsuits filed Monday represent what attorneys described as the first of many expected legal actions.

One lawsuit describes what it calls "a continuous, decades-long child sex ring at Holy Angels," alleging abuse occurred from 1969 to 2002.

According to attorneys, one former student alleged the abuse began as molestation.

"It escalated into forced oral sex over 20 times and then rape as a fifth and sixth grade boy," attorney Steven Hart said. "He was told by the priest to keep quiet and to shut his mouth. And if he did, God would protect him."

The lawsuits name four former priests: George Clements, Paul Smith, John Calicott and Kenneth Brigham.

Attorneys allege the abuse occurred on a daily basis. All four priests have died.

Clements, a trailblazing Black priest who was regarded as a civil rights hero by many African American Catholics, denied an earlier abuse claim before his death in 2019. He was never charged.

Attorneys argued that responsibility extends beyond the priests and includes the Archdiocese of Chicago.

"The Archdiocese didn't stumble into this. The Archdiocese knew, knew for more than a year," Hart said.

According to attorneys, church records show Calicott was removed from ministry in 1994 because of abuse allegations and was named pastor of Holy Angels the following year.

Attorneys also cited what they said was a later admission by church officials that safeguards meant to monitor clergy were ineffective.

"The Chicago Archdiocese said years later, an effective monitoring system does not exist," Hart said.

Angela Walker of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests called for accountability.

"The church hierarchy needs to be held accountable, and they need to compensate these victims for all of the trauma that they suffered," Walker said.

The lawsuits describe the alleged victims as "overwhelmingly poor, Black boys" in kindergarten through eighth grade.

Attorneys contend race played a role in how complaints were handled and have made those allegations part of their legal claims.

Asked whether the students would have received different support if they had been white, attorney Sean O'Malley responded, "Yes."

Hart added: "Let me just say it in a different way. They're not white. Not one."

Attorneys said they expect dozens more lawsuits in the coming weeks as additional alleged survivors come forward.
