When I was an ambulance driver, I once had to pick up a biker - as in motorbike - from the streets. We knew and loathed each other. Nevertheless I remember shaking when I bound his wounds. Too close to home. He never knew who picked him up until later. We became friends after that. Shaking hands and having a talk every time we meet. Even if it's at the mall.

I used to cycle a lot and it is dangerous. The man you saved was so fortunate to have someone who cared there for him.

She really is something special - she is one of the most compassionate people I have ever known and I love her for it, amongst other things.

Which, as I said, surprises me. I never made that experience. There were always people there, eager to help, when I stumbled into situations like that. It was more like holding them back, since they didn't know what they were doing. Very good intentions but no knowledge. They could have worsened the situation, since you have to know what you are doing when dealing with a traumatised person. Such as moving them with utmost care until the folks with the vacuum mattress arrived.

Nothing in your local news about it?

I agree with you, that was just my irrational me speaking, I don't think I'd be much better myself in a situation like that :/

I wouldn't be much good these days either, since time has moved on and so have the required skills. A reanimation process is very much different than it was some 20 years ago. Far as I know, you only do heart massage these days whereas in my days it was 5 to 1. 5 pumps of massage, 1 pump of oxygen.
The big deal about helping someone is that you have to violate the person in order to help them. If you are doing heart massage, be ready for their ribs breaking under the pressure. It's all about the lesser evil. You have to jump over your shadow and be ready for feeling one or two ribs popping when trying to reanimate them. Nothing you can do about that, so when training as a medic, this is drilled into you.
On a lighter note, this is probably less dangerous here in Europe, since we don't have this culture of lawsuits over good intentions.

Yeah, administering first-aid on-scene takes sang froid as well as skill and knowledge.
