I bet Beccs would love that quote.
I miss her a bit.

She'll be back....
She's currently playing around in Sudan, I think.
Hoping she's well.

I'm doing real things.
Studying to take my State Boards...
That's pretty real to me. Especially since school is costing me nearly twenty grand.

I was rather thinking on the lines of moving ones ass into dangerous regions to help other people to survive.
We're all doing something. But that doesn't mean we're risking life and limb for people we don't even know. And that most certainly includes my sorry ass, which I haven't moved to help other for the last two decades.

Yeah, I don't have the bucks to fly to South Sudan. We all gotta participate in the world the best way we know how.

I don't have the talents to help people in Sudan.
We all do what we can do. Not risking life and limb doesn't mean you're not making a huge difference somewhere.

It would be better to stop making those kinds of comparisons. Some people are smart enough or wealthy enough to contribute meaningfully in various ways to places abroad that are dangerous. Some people are smart enough and kind enough or have the talents that help people in less dangerous, but equally harrowing places - like with our veterans or homeless shelters or rape crisis centers and the like.
Those people shouldn't be denigrated just because someone went to Sudan instead and vice-versa.

Right after the revolution of '89 I went to Romania with a Red Cross support team, while the situation was far from stable. Didn't cost me a dime. Only the opportunity to be away for a week.
There's a difference between denigrating most people, including me, and admiring others for actually going the extra mile. Beccs or Valkyrie how she calls herself now, is obviously well off in the job she's doing. The majority of people in her situation can't be bothered to help out in an Ebola epidemic or other infested regions on the butt end of the world.
So, I admire her for that and give her my thanks. That however doesn't mean I look down on other, since I am part of the others.

Great on you if you're helping other people from afar in some other ways.
Me, I'd at least try and do that too if I wasn't unemployed and clueless about what I'm going to do with my life
There's this argument some philosopher made that the sums of money we spend that we don't really need to is basically equivalent to walking past a child drowning in a pond and doing nothing to help them, the point being you should give that money to charity and only reserve to yourself enough that you know will allow you to be able to function well enough in order to either make more money or make the same amount of money so that you keep donating at the same level or more, in the future.
Basically, most everyone in the West(well, not exclusively from the West) should do this until every starving and sick child in the world gets the care they need.
It's hard to find anything wrong with his argument, really. Sam posted a great podcast recently talking about it to a young philosopher who's dedicated his life to doing this, let me link it for anyone interested. It's a fascinating topic, really.
