Did god make anyone non special?

No.  We're all special.

I would prefer to live longer than the average human lifespan. I would prefer many things. This universe is very, very far from being optimized for sentient beings.

How do you deal with this? You accept that you and the universe aren't special. You are what you are. And that might not make for the grand finale of a sappy, sentimental story, but it's real. It's true. And accepting reality is worth more than false hope.

Well, I'm getting up there and I'll tell ya that as far as life span goes, it's quality over quantity.

If you don't think so visit a dementia unit. I got a mild reminder on Monday.

RE: How I deal with no afterlife
See, for me...as an atheist, I don't deal with not having an afterlife.  I have one, it's real in ways that ghostly choirs are not...and it may not be a bed of roses.  I have to work at it.

I have many,. many children.  They're watching me, and they'll outlive my opinions of them or myself....when I'm dead and buried they'll be the ones telling people who I was.  I want them to spin fantastic lies about me, to tell people I was greater than I could ever have truly been. I'm turning this little hill I found into a secret garden, I'm gonna be broke and broken before I'm done...but it'll be beautiful, and so are they.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

No so fast Brewer! You're not out of the woods. I said you're special, not saved.

So he's special, just not that special?

Why do you believe this? If the universe is not optimized for sentient beings, why did we evolve to be so? Doesn't make sense to me.

The universe doesn't have to optimized for sentient beings for us to evolve. It just has to be not optimized against us.

With no metaphysical interest or principle favoring or precluding the development of sentient beings, it stands to reason that less-than-optimized sentient beings will develop.

The way stated it in your previous post, it sounds like you were saying that we would be better adapted to life in this world if we were not sentient beings.

The greatest possible life for me would be a life that is optimized for me.  It would be a life where I can get anything I want.  That would be the far greater life than this one.  It would be a life in the distant future created through science.

But this life is all I have though.  It is unfortunate and isn't much at all compared to a life where I can get everything I want, but it is all I have.  But I do remain undecided as to whether there is an afterlife or not.  Hopefully there is an eternal blissful afterlife for me after I die since it would be the far greater life than this unfortunate life of hardship I am living in now.

Lastly, if I could choose the type of life I wanted, then I would choose a life that is nothing but blissful, has no suffering, no misery, and no death. It would be a happy life where I can live in a mansion, have a highly expensive hdtv, etc. and don't have to worry about any suffering or problems in my life.
