Ask a Bible college Student
RE: Ask a Bible college Student
You may have overlooked my question, emzap, since you're responding to posts below mine: What is your criteria for respect?

Can't be that you're not feeling like answering that simple question, can it?

You could create an Introduction Thread.

Why here of all places? There's an introduction category.

book arrived

Immediately noticed the author is Moody Bible College alum.  LOL!, MBC published (and I suspect HEAVILY helped with the first draft onwards) my Tanner book, Mormonism: Shadow or Reality outlining the connivance of all that is Mormon.

And after reading just a ways into it, I note a strong similarity in some regards to seeing scriptural quotes and cross comparisons with 'things that just don't make sense' from the bible to the blizzard of citations in the Tanner tome.

One doesn't need to read very far into Jesus Interrupted to realize the concept of Biblical Inerrancy  makes as much sense in reality as Xemu flying around our galaxy in a DC-8 looking for a planet with volcanoes to drop souls and nukes into.

-however-

no matter how ignorant, or brain damaged, or deluded one has to be to believe BI, aren't True Christians® stuck with it regardless ?

Once the door is opened a crack into the possibility the Bible  not only contains flaws, but is absolutely riddled with them, we're going to have people, imbued with hubris and a sense they know more than the God of the Bible does leading other people with the imprimatur of God's seal of approval as to what's right and what's wrong in scripture.

And that is NOT religion.  It's fraud.

There is, IMO, no First Amendment cover for that.  Even Jesus, despite being in a moment of befuddlement possibly, nevertheless, intoned, "Defraud not".

How, bout that! I didn't need the Timothy thing about "all scripture is suitable" that time !!!

That's why the fundies hate him so much.  He studied their shit.  Knows it better than they do in the original Greek and dismissed it as bullshit.  That's a crime that the jesus freaks can't forgive.

My only problem with Ehrman is that he fails to see the net result of his work.  He spent 20 years pissing on this propagandistic gospel horseshit and then wants to still use it to show that there "must have" been a historical person behind the resulting myth.  It's like shitting in a small puddle for 20 years and then saying "it's okay, guys, I found a clean spot to drink from."

Terribly unconvincing.  Carrier's euhemerization of a mythical character is far more logical.

Yes, he has already telegraphed where he is heading with his book, and I'm not buying it.

He's laying out a devastating case against the absolute bedrock foundations of Judaism and Christianity, and then it looks like he's still going to endorse Christ, warts and all, when he's done.

I love the 'horizontal reading' technique. I can see fundies however erupting with calls of BLASPHEMER and HERETIC regardless of what he finds. Bad enough to doubt the Bible, but to have citation after citation FROM THE BIBLE that cannot be answered or explained away, why, it's enough to make Xemu's head explode.

When Ehrman says "historical jesus" he does not support any of the miracle horseshit.... which is the only reason why anyone would have followed such a loser in the first place.

Ehrman sees jesus as a failed apocalyptic preacher.  Sort of the Jim Jones of his day.

or Joseph Smith

I am reminded of my studies of Mormonism CONTINUOSULY while reading Jesus Interrupted. The Mormons followed the playbook to the letter, it is truly fucking amazing.

Christianity isn't any more 'real' than the golden plates.
