I am in favor of simplifying the process of immigration.  I am also in favor of - GASP - amnesty for those already here.  I'm also in favor of abolishing the H-1B Visa program.

What do you think that fuckhead Drumpf would think of that?

Alabama Illegal Immigrant Crackdown Destroys Farm Business

On Sunday, the Associated Press reported worker shortages have prompted some Alabama farmers who grow labor-intensive produce to plant less, rather than have crops rot in the fields again this year. Last fall Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley signed a tough law combating illegal immigration, which prompted undocumented workers to flee the state. Few locals will perform the grueling work of picking crops, and farmers stuck in a agricultural system built on illegal labor are struggling to find replacements before their produce rots. 

Alabama’s situation is not unique. Georgia passed a similar immigration law in 2011. When undocumented workers fled, farmers lost around 40% of their workers and $140 million worth of blueberries, melons, onions, and other crops due to labor shortages. This year Georgia farmers again fear they will be short on workers to pick the crops, and many have scaled back production or stopped planting altogether.

I agree with this partially. I don't think EVERYONE who is already here should be allowed to stay. Then all it would take is for someone to just trespass, and once they set foot here they stay. I don't think that's reasonable. 

I think families who have been here for a long time and who have a good life here should be allowed to stay, especially if children are involved. But not the dude who just crossed the desert/ocean/lake/whatever yesterday, for example.  

...I do think the border should be enforced and regulated for those trying to come in (obviously we can't just let anyone and everyone walk right in willy nilly at their whim), but think the idea of a wall is stupid. Should the process for getting in be simplified? I dunno. Don't know enough about it to say. But yes, there should be a "process" for getting in.

No one's accusing -you- of racism, CL.  So stop.  People are, however, pointing out that the propositions being floated are as racist as they can get without spontaneously setting fire to a cross.

There -is- a process for getting in. That process is -why- people are crossing illegally, and not on a whim...if you'll recall you were admiring their bravery not but a few pages back. It takes big steely ones to risk what they risk, just so they can eat the scraps that fall from the american table, knowing full well how they'll be treated when they get here...and increasingly realizing how little "sympathy" that folks will have for them in -all- of it.

What's the problem with it? That chart shows you all the possible ways you can get a visa / green card, it's bound to be complicated.

Its not supposed to represent a single person's route through the system.

Once you have a path defined, following it is long but not complicated. You fill out the forms they tell you to, gather the evidence they ask for, and send them in.

I saw. I think a lot of these workers would fall under the category of people who have already made a life here. And immigrants can certainly come here... just please do it legally.

The world is not as simple as you wish it to be.

There's a massive difference between immigrants and refugees. We aren't talking about the latter, and the two shouldn't be conflated.
