I didn't mean to attack him, and backed off once I realized he was socio. I don't know how to argue the morality of something without either bringing empathy or God into the picture. Neither of which apply to him.

You could pretend.  What do you think a world without God would look like?

I have 0 idea.
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

Our friend here probably isn't a sociopath in any case.  Just a run of the mill dick (in good company there, lol) who finds the term "sociopath" to be an edgier and more acceptable alternative, lol.
I like to think I'm a much better dick than run of the mill.

You say you're a sociopath. If you're being truthful, that's a brain problem. I sympathize (which is not the same thing as empathize), and I guess I held a stereotype that sociopaths don't have touchy feelers. My apologies for not empathizing with you to your satisfaction. I hope you'll be okay.

We all like to think that.  It's never true.   Wink

To be fair, people don't choose their mental illness in the same way they don't choose their skin color.

It's pointless to cast judgement on him on something he has no control over. The important thing is that he recognizes right from wrong and the value of human life, despite not feeling empathy. If he can do that, then I have no further complaints.

Why do you guys assume sociopaths don't have an empathy switch?
Lots of psychopaths of various stripes have been shown to both have mirror neurons, and that those neurons can go off when people are explicitly asked to put themselves in the shoes of another.

Psychopathy is complicated. There is a very good chance that there is more to this than just "moral subjectivist doesn't empathize".
Either way, it's not really pertinent. Empathy or not, shrugging your shoulders at the issue this thread is addressing because "moral subjectivity" is a low hanging fruit.

Because it's definitional to the diagnosis (insomuch as there is one...there is no specific diagnosis for either...they simply fall along a broad category of other disorders)........lol?

Psycopaths and sociopaths are not the same thing. A swing and a miss. Probably an honest mistake, though, thanks for the link...good stuff.
