I thought that one of the things that helped Trump was that (1)he admitted that the political system was corrupt and (2)plainly admitted that he used that corruption to his benefit. If you're Hillary, how do you defend yourself when Trump claims that he donated lots of money and that you came calling when he wanted to pad the guest list for his wedding? It's a cultural belief that politicians are corrupt and can be bought, and here was a guy boasting about it and exposing some of his main opponents. Would people curse him for admitting that he was part of the problem, or would they praise him for being the only one to do so in such an open and audacious manner?

I thought he was hurting himself with so many of his claims, both in the past and during the campaign. But it's clear that he was striking a very different chord with many Americans. Did they see a plasticized buffoon making a fool of himself, or a brash and confident man humiliating his opponents and leaving them with little to say in return? And imagine where his reputation stands with them now, after Romney once again got on his metaphorical knees after Trump bragged about how he owned him.

Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. I'm with alpha male on this one.  If not civil war, I think at least severe civil unrest is quite possible if Trump is not confirmed.  Many of his supporters are rabid and unhinged to begin with, and he has been stirring them up for months with the notion that the election was going to be "stolen" from him, covertly but plainly suggesting that if he doesn't get the office they should kill everyone who opposed him.

It is an interesting dilemma, though.  On the one hand stopping Trump from taking office is EXACTLY the stated purpose of the electoral college.  Two past presidents in his own party refused to support him, which is unheard of.  Many leaders in his own party vowed to vote for the Democrat, also unheard of.  That he is unfit for office, that's not just something coming from the left.  It's coming from prominent people in his own party too.

On the other hand if they actually do that it will seriously enrage his supporters and start a conspiracy fear which will last for decades.  This is exactly the type of "steal the election" scenario he has been talking about for months.  Never mind that this is the way the system was designed, the very reason that we supposedly still have an electoral college.  Then it's about "the will of the people".  And never mind that he didn't win the popular vote because you get to pick and choose the parts you like and ignore the parts you don't.  That's just how religion and politics work.

The funny thing is that if the electoral college actually works as designed for the first time ever, that is what would probably kill the electoral college.  But without it, Trump would have never gotten the election anyway.
Have you ever noticed all the drug commercials on TV lately?  Why is it the side effects never include penile enlargement or super powers?
Side effects may include super powers or enlarged penis which may become permanent with continued use.  Stop taking Killatol immediately and consult your doctor if you experience penis enlargement of more than 3 inches, laser vision, superhuman strength, invulnerability, the ability to explode heads with your mind or time travel.  Killatoll is not for everyone, especially those who already have convertibles or vehicles of ridiculous size to supplement penis size.

Fuck it. Confirm him, swear him in, and then buckle your seatbelts. I'm prepared to ride this beast right through the gates of hell. I'll either end up pleasantly amazed at how wrong I was, or Trump is going to fuck up things in ways W. Bush could only dream of doing. In that case, I'll enjoy the spectacle of the very people who supported the demagogue crying the loudest as they get corn-holed relentlessly for the next several years. That, or we'll all get to enjoy a hell of an impeachment show.

Feeling a bit misanthropic today.

That's kind of where I have been since a week or so after the election, except the impeachment scares the hell out of me on a couple of levels.

First, Pence is no winner with his "Magic is real, science is not" ideas.

Second, I have an inerrant distrust of Republicans already.  I feel I must fact-check everything they say.  To make matters worse, they're sly.  What other group could get together and say, "Hey, let's stop black people from voting", pass bills to do just that AND make people back down by saying, "HOW DARE YOU call me racist!" when they are called out on what they did and why?  They like Pence.  Many of them don't like Trump, but they'd give Pence a handy if he asked real nice.  I wouldn't put it past them to impeach trump JUST to make Pence president.  And that scares me.  Because if they find a way to replace "the electable guy" with "the guy we really want" after an election THEY WILL start doing it regularly.  It's a bait-and-switch that they could actually pull off, and it if works well they could do it again and again, and they would, given the chance.  To a Republican the only way an election is "fair" is if they won, no matter how much they had to cheat to do it.  They don't care about the rules.  They don't care about the laws.  They don't care about democracy.  The only thing they care about is getting their way all the time.

So, yeah, I see impeachment as a very real and pretty damned scary possibility because it will usher in a new age of Republican cheating.

I expect him to be sworn in and serve his full term. I expect that the damage he does will be minor at first and it's the long-term effects that we will feel the most. I would not be surprised if the markets dip over the next 12-18 months, not because of anything Trump does but because a correction is inevitable and the sooner it happens the better. That does mean that the economy could rebound in 2019/2020 and Trump might look like a genius and be on his way to a second term, but that depends on him not committing any embarrassing gaffes or displaying a stunning lack of awareness in dealing with some issues. I'd be surprised if he makes it through four years without looking like a dangerous clown at least a couple of times, but that could also make him even more likeable to his supporters.
