If the Bible is such a great tool for life, how come people stopped having slaves like it commands, and how come people stopped stoning everyone like the bible commands?
Crucifixion of Jesus;
Thursday or Friday ? The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.

A have a few questions for you, lighthouse:
What archaeological evidence can you cite that lends credence to the Exodus narrative? If the answer is 'none', then are you open to the possibility that the Exodus might be a fiction in the service of later royal or priestly propaganda? If so, what effect, if any, would that have on your faith in the rest of your holy book? Does it give you pause that Mary of Magdalene, a woman who -- to put this gently -- had some mental issues, was the only one the four Gospels agree was there at the tomb? Does that suggest any possibilities other than "Jesus was literally resurrected"? RE: questions for a christian

The bible actually contains a lot of really really awesome understandings and advice on how to live. And having to kill a bird before a girl can come back into the house after a period. And of course anyone with a tattoo to be killed. I think she might mean the "nice" advice on how to live. You can fix ignorance, you can't fix stupid. Tinkety Tonk and down with the Nazis.
Serious question: do you believe that being torn apart by bears is an appropriate punishment for making fun of an old man's bald head?

Which truth do you think is the truth? I think what Whateverist means is that when you state simply that the Word is the Truth that statement entails far more than the canonical Bible serving as a resource for various types of knowledge, like an historical record, collection of scientific facts, or psychological insights. Personally, I think a literal reading of the Biblical text (like the one you seem to advocate) is a bad hermeneutic. It might help you to reflect on the words of Jesus when he says "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life" or when St. John says of Him, "In the beginning was the Word..." Trying to understand what those kinds of verses mean is far more interesting than trying to shoehorn the findings of modern science into an ancient text. |
